I recently got a Mad Dog DVD burner. I own several dozen movies, and I started backing them up with Office Max 8x DVD-R; so far, all the back ups have played w/o a problem.
However, just yesterday I bought Memorex DVD+R media, 16x, and it seemed to have copied fine, but the discs won't play on any of my 3 stand-alone players.
Does anyone know what might have gone wrong? I bought the DVD+Rs because I read in some threads that they were better thand DVD-Rs.
Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thx.

It just may be a compatibiltiy issue with the media and the player. You can visit this site to see which type of medias that your players prefer: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

I am sure you will get some responses about the media you chose. Memorex is not quality. You would have been better off using the Office Depot branded +R's in 8x. These are Ritek R03 media and very good quality.

Another think you could do is to booktype your +R to DVD-ROM as this will make the backups more playable on virtually any player as DVD-ROM is the standard DVD format for commercial DVD's.

You can learn about it here:

@Mendoza.........welcome to AfterDawn.......now that you realize that Memorex is not the best brand out there: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
check out the media guide and realize what is good media! Taiyo Yuden (you can buy them online at supermediastore.com, rima.com, merit.com and other stores), Verbatim, Sony, Maxell to name a few are great. Many members love Ritek, also. Keep in mind that the better disks are made in Japan. So if you go to the stores try to get the made in Japan ones (read labels). And here is another great thread that helps most Newbies: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136
check out the guides from BBMayo and Scubba Pete! Check out #3 and #12 which are right what you want to know about your stand alones and booktype/bitsetting!
Here is a great, free program that might booktype your burner:
http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
some burners you can't booktype as 9mmruger1 pointed out, and you should take his advise to check out your burner at: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php
hope this helps.

I just had one question. Why would you switch to another media if your previous media worked flawless before? Because someone on here said +R are better? I always say use what works best for you as this doesnt always work the best for someone else. I would suggest you stick to what works.

Cheers

First, I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond. As you can tell, I am indeed a newbie to the DVD burning world. I read the suggested tutorials and they clarified most everything for me. Also, the people who suggested that I stick to what works, they are certainly correct - I just thought I would try some other media types, and see what happened; it's funny how we humans are always looking for alternate "solutions", even when the current one works, hehehehe. I also have a couple of DVD-R DLs, but I haven't tried recording on them; I think they are Memorex too, so I will see if I can return them.

In any event, I am using CloneDVD in combination with AnyDVD. I have a couple of follow up questions:
1. How can I use the bitsetting feature with CloneDVD?
2. Can I use DVD Decrypter with Nero?

Again, I thank everyone for their time and help. Best regards.

Hola Mendoza.

The only thing that works but i would gladly change for one that didn't would be my mother in law... LOL

I have used Clone DVD for a while and it's still in stock form...

If you want to rip with Decrypter and burn with Nero, why not?

Stick with the mix n'match that works best for you.

Miggs.

Not supported in CloneDVD... You'll need to use your drive's booktyping utility (if available) or burn with something else (ie, Nero, Decrypter, ImgBurn)....
