movie starts to burn, but I/O error - is it my drive or shrink?

I posted a question in the DVD+-R drive forum, but nobody has even responded. I am not intending to double post, but because I use Shrink, I can't be sure if this is a Shrink issue or if it is a hardware issue.
I have backed up approximately 200 movies with only a few coasters burned when I was learning. I only use quality media (TY) and burn slowly (4x). I always use dvd shrink and dvd decypter, but that should not matter because I think this is a hardware issue.
Early today when I inserted the original movie the drive made a weird noise. I ejected the disk, it looked fine, and no scratches, so I put it back in. I ran shrink and it looked like it was working just fine, but it was going slow.
When it came time to put in the destination disc (the blank media) I insered it and left the room. When I returned I found an error message. I ejected the disc and tossed it in the trash and inserted another blank media but the same result.
I shut down the computer and returned a few hours later and tried to back up a different movie, and I made sure to use a TY media from a spindle that I knew was good, but the same result (error during the burn to the blank media).
I shut down and tried again with a 3rd original movie and I used a ?wr disc this time, so I didn?t waste any more media.
Here is the error report. Any ideas? Is my dvd burner shot, or maybe just need firmware?

Thanks guys, but even after i updated the firmware, my drive makes a weird noise when it first reads the disc and it still has the error.
I assume that means the drive is shot.
I am going to buy another drive asap and i have narrowed it down to:
NEC ND-3550A
Pioneer DVR-110D
BenQ DW1620 Pro
LG Electronics GSA- 4167B
All 4 of these I can get for about $40 OEM.
Any one in particular? I am leaning towards the first one (NEC).

Thanks, but at $140, I could buy 3 of any of the other dvd drives. I find it hard to believe that these other drives are so untrustworthy that the Plexor is worth the money. Right now money is tight, so I prefer to buy cheaper. All of these listed drives are all recommended by large reputable computer magazines.

I have the NEC 3540a and love it, Ruger has the 3550 that you are looking at and I think he likes it. So I'm leaning towards the NEC drives. I'm still waiting on the Plextor 716 to come down a bit, I wouldn't mind having one of those too.
But one more thing before you chuck that old burner. In DVD Shrink go to Edit, Preferences, I/O tab and make sure that the enable overlapped I/O-this may improve ripping time option is not ticked.

Sure sounds like something is wacked in your drive. They all make some kind of noise, but it shouldn't be anything loud or unusual. Any of those drives you listed should be good. I have the LG 4166B, and my only complaint is i have no updated firmware, or even a listing for that drive. It burns fine, and is very quiet. You are using the best media, so that shouldn't be it, but just to be sure, you could try a Verb. I wouldn't waste any more discs though. Wait until you get your new drive, and see if that fixes it. It probably will, and then you can put a movie on that disc, instead of making another coaster.

I have a Pioneer in my Vaio and it works like a champ. I have not had any problems with it.

Thanks for the feedback. i went with the NEC ND-3550A from supermediastore and with 2nd day air it was about $52.

Congrats on the new drive, you can get your hacked firmware from here: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/
It will remove riplock, enable bitsetting and make your drive region free.

Yes, you will like the drive for sure. It rips like a demon. Very fast, I am getting -7 minute rips. I did a complete, start to finish rip and burn in sub 23 minutes. Excellent.
