Hey guys. I have been coming to AfterDawn for some time now and you have been a huge help. I have a problem that I hope can be easily fixed. Recently, some of the movies I burn are pausing at different points. I was watching a burn of Cry Wolf and it would just pause and skip and then resume play. It would skip a few seconds of video or audio and then either keep playing or just stop. Last night I copied Red Eye. I think it was chapter 3 when she was boarding the plane. It started pausing again when she was handing in her ticket. I popped it out and watched the original with no problem. This morning I popped my copy in my computer and it played fine right through that scene.
Has anyone ever had this problem?
Thanks for any help!

One more thing.. I have been reading other posts in here and saw someone say that you should not put paper labels on your DVDs. I put them on Cry Wolf and also Final Destination did the same thing. Red Eye did not have a paper label yet, but it is a DVD that you can print on. Could this be the problem?
Thanks!

The paper labels can make the dvd's unbalanced causing playback problems. There's a thread somewhere here on the best way to remove the paper labels - I'll try and find it. The ones you print directly on shouldn't cause this. I have a lot of dvd's I've printed on - no problems.
Another problem could be your media - which brand are your using? Burn speed?

There was a deal at Costco where you buy 1 100pk of TDK printable DVD+R and get another free. So I am hoping the disks are fine since I still have over 100 left. I am burning at 4x speed. I have an 8x burner and the discs say 8x, but for some reason shrink is only burning 4x.
Thanks

TDK uses some iffy manufacturers - one of them is cmc which is the worst. Run those disc thru a dvd id'er and post back the manufacturer.
Here's a prog if you need one:
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Keep the burn speed at 4x or lower esp if they're made by one of the poorer manufacturers.
You should also make sure your burner's firmware is up to date.

Thanks! I will look into the manufacturer. I have only had the problem with a few of those discs, so I am hoping that it doesn't happen again.
Do you think it could be dust in my DVD player? I used a cleaner, but it didn't seem to work. At one point I put the disc in to play and it said the disc was dirty. The disc was brand new. I took it out, put it back in and it played.
OH WELL... I don't want to go on too much about this. I thank you for your help and I hope this doesn't happen too often.

Not a prob!
Could be your player - they can be picky with media. I use a lens cleaning disc occasionally. Yeah hopefully the problem won't happen to often but if those tdk's are made by one of the poor manufacturers they'll end up degrading. I'd stop using them if that's the case cause at some point they will become unplayable/unripable. I'd definitely id them to find out.

binkie is right... its easier to just stay away from TDK media..
sale or not, its not worth the time and trouble. use trusted media, such as taiyo yuden, verbatim, fuji, sony, maxell (made in japan except for the verbatim).
burn at speeds of 4x till you get comfortable with the media and your burner too..
check firmware updates, programs up to date, keep the burner lens clean, and often, defrag often, never multi-task while encoding or burning, and dont use paper lables, better to use a printer that can print to media (like the epson r340.. on sale at best buy for 179. with a 30 dollar rebate)..
hope this helps a bit !

Thanks again! You guys are a big help. I think I am going to just take my chances with the rest of these DVDs and then switch to a more reliable and printable brand. I will also look into that printer sale. I have one question regarding the printable DVDs. I noticed some people talking about coating them once they printed on them. Is this necessary? if so, what do I have to spray them with?
Thanks

spraying them, with a clear coat, makes them shiney looking.. nothing fancy, just gives a nice looking finish. but you can accomplish the same effect with thermal ink jet printables.. they are a bit more pricey, but the result is nice.. run a search on a buddy member of mine called 'alkohol' you'll see what i am saying... he has one attached to his sig..

I'd definitely id those disc - used crappy ones 'back in the day' - boy what a mistake - had to redo them all - so more $ and time in the long run.
I don't clear coat mine - keep them in a dvd/cd case so they still look good but I also don't have young kids - the spray will also protect them. The silver ones gear is talked about are the silver inkjet and they look pretty cool when printed on - have a 3d/holographic look.

Checked out the manufacturer of the DVDs and it was CMC! Coincidence? I THINK NOT! Well I guess I will be buying some new ones. For now I will have to stay away from the printables. I am not sure when I will be able to pick up a printer.
How do I get the firmware update for my burner. I have a DELL and it's about 2 years old now.
Thanks again!

Good thing you id'd those discs!!! - Unfortunately you lucked out. Definitely trash em. Even a firmware update (still do though) can't help the quality of this discs.
Oh and Staples is having a sale on Sony - 50 for 14.99 - get the made in japan and you should be good to go.
