When I make a backup of my movie using Shrink, I have the option of making it region free or opting for region 1. I understand what the regions are and why, but my question has to do with compatibility. My sister insists that because she makes all her backups region 1 and I make mine region free, that is why her backups play on a specific standalone while mine does not. We use different burners (hers is a Plexor & mine is a Lite-on, and she was using Maxell discs and I was using Ritek. We are both upgrading our discs to TY).

So my questions is - can making a region free disk limit the compatibility with standalone players?

Nope, the reason for making a region free copy is to increase the compatability. If your sister's copy's play on more stand alone players, she might be booktyping whereas you are not.

I know she is not booktyping. We are both using -R discs and my understanding was that the booktyping only needed to be done with +R.

Booktyping can only be done with +R, correct, and it also makes for a more compatable copy.
