Yeah I just think the FF series is overated anymore. There are comparable franchises. Grandia, Phantasy Star, Shadow Hearts, Suikoden, Dragon Quest, Tales series, Digital Devil Saga, the Shining Series, Dark Cloud, Star Ocean, Crono series, and Xenosaga/gears. The point I've been trying to make is that if some of these games didn't have the FF named attatched, people wouldn't shower them with praise. FFX-2 is not worty of the FF name. In my opinion neither is FFIX. If these were released by Konami and had different names, they wouldn't have recieved nearly the fanfare. When I played the FFXII demo, I wasn't really impressed. Yes the visuals are fantastic, but the Gameplay did little for me. The battle system seemed like a mish mash of Adventure/Strategy/RPG that just didn't work. Stick with what works. Don't try to mix different genre's, if I wanted RE4 or Parasite Eve, I'd play RE4 or Parasite Eve. I think this is an important crossroads for SquareEnix. If FFXII disappoints, they may loose some of the die hard fans of the series. Not enough to hurt sales, the FF name will ensure that, but maybe enough to force them back to the drawing board. That's not likely though, it's all about money. If they keep churning eye-popping stink fests that sell, why would they change? The ones that lose out are people like me, who remember what RPG's were like before FFVII.

I just have to comment on dark cloud.
Dark cloud and darkcloud 2 were pretty good games(in my eyes) I've played both of them, and yes they were fun. Time well wasted ^^
Every game site you visit, you will see that dark cloud was ranked really high, even by other people.
Check gamespot if you want to.
I see that FF XII takes darkcloud 2's battle theme, so i guess it will be fun.
Darkcloud 2 came pretty close to final fantasy, it just reaks plot.
By the way, (kind of off topic) but since this is an online *rpg*, does anyone know about KalOnline?
http://kalonline.com/
I'm just introducing a game, what i think you people will like.
Ill just add some posatives and negatives to it.
+
*It's free
*Battle system is great, ideas are great. You can either be a mage, archer or knight
*most people are kind
*it's online
*Resembles Darkcloud because it's sorta very repetative.
*Once you hit arround lvl 26, it takes atleast a day to gain *1* level. Once you hit level 40, it takes weeks to level. THE GAME IS LONG LONG ...sorta never ending.
*Idea's of spells & special attacks are excellent! Look at the guide from the homepage to look at skills.
-
*TRANSLATIONS ARE HORRIBLE, (the game is from korea, and it's in beta testing. )
*Easy to hack
*many hackers
*Its hard to get money
*It's hard to level
*Servers suck, they always are well slow or brocken. They have to fix it.
Story line reaks, translations for quests are bad, you'd barly understand anything unless you use a guide off the internet.
*extreemly bad plot.(in my eyes) its like the game is about leveling up only.
*Maitenence sucks, takes forever for customer service.
sorry that this game is off topic, i just want to know what you guys think about this game, give it a try, its fre to download
FFXII has many elements that Kalonline h as, which is why i think it will be a great game.
>_<

I think Final Fantasy will live on aslong as the stories are good.. they have to keep them fresh.. cant just be above saving a princess and rescuing a entire world from the dark mage forces.
I think what theyve been doing recently with the battle system is quite interesting. It allows for the newbie to come in and complete it.. but also for more serious gamers to expand their techniques. All the major games do this it seems.
Take tekken for example.. can easily be just a button bashing game but it also allows for really advance combos and moves. I know Tekken is nothing like FF, but i couldnt think of anything quickly
I played the FF12 demo.. wasnt too impressed.. but ill hold off til the game comes out

Yeah as long as they make good new stories they should still be great. What i want to see is more storylines that are 'out there'. There has to be some archaic like element in them too, like old scripture spells and stuff - something that is kinda mystical and no one can really understand. Also i think they need better weapon customisation. FFVII was good with the materia, but i think FFX went a bit downhill and moreso for FFX-2. I reckon i cool storyline would be some random beings told about in legend of whatever race is on the planet comes back and claims to be their gods. Then everyone can rebel against them, of course they are so strong only few can, and so fourth. Just a random thoht. Also, what about FFVII: The Rebirth of Jenova? In Advent children you see how theres some of Jenovas cells left, so why cant she be reborn? It would be cool to fight sepiroth again, and they could bring aeris back!! Oh well never actually gonna happen..... If only.

Final Fantasy X had a fantastic plot, as well as FFVIII. I like a level of complexity that most people either can't or won't follow. All my favorite anime/games have extremely complex plots like Xenogears, RahXephon, FFX, FFVIII, etc. I played through Xenogears twice, there's no way in hell I could explain everything that happened in that game. I'm a plot junkie. If a game has a fantastic plot, I'm willing to overlook a lot of other things. Xenogears for instance, was a highly flawed game. Disc two was cheesy, you mainly sat and watched the story unfold, with virtually no interaction. The combat system was a mish/mash of fighting games. The enemies were pathetic at almost every point. You could buy really cheap items at the end of the game from Joe(or w/e his name was) that made your gears ridiculous. Fei's final technique Yamikei could do insane damage at low HP. There was no replay value to the game, except the amazing plot. In spite of all that, it remains my all time fav. Fei/ID Graf, Fei's father, the masked men, elements of alien abdcution, soylent green, God and Biblical passages, Fei's cruel destiny, Ramsey's tragic character, all these elements combined to make an unbelievable story. At some points Xenosaga reminds of Xenogears. I recently burned the game to Verbatim DVD+R DL. The hairs on my arm stand up when watching the intro of the game, the Zohar emerging from the ocean, the rain falling from the sky, and the leap to 5,000 years later. It has all the compelling elements that made Xenogears so good. I like the original Xenosaga. The ending was quite the same. After destroying Proto Merkabah and crashing toward Second Miltia, you find out that certain characters have amazing hidden powers and sordid pasts. At one point a couple characters turn and refer to one of the main characters as "boss" and you're like wtf, it's unmistakable, the camera zooms in on that particular character. Sorry for the rant, just reminiscing about Xenogears/Xenosaga. Cheers! P.S. I finished downloading FFX-PAL complete with Dark Aeons and Pennance, burned it to TY's and it plays perfectly. Cheers!

well i agree wiv tht..
i hope they release some 'proper' rpg final fantasy's soon, like ff7 and before tht, full of attacks, magic, summons and limit breaks and a beefy storyline to sink ya teeth into and have twist n turns along the way.. oh and the old ATB battle meter, wot happened to it?!...and exploring the world too!(i miss that alot)
rebirth of jenova sounds good, i reckon they might do something like tht, ff7 game, then ac film nd then a new game to carry on story.. or another fantastic cg movie!

Tokijin
I can stand the Plot and storys of FF8 and FFX,its the gamepaly that killed most of my intrest in them.
I enjoyed FF7 and FF9 more. FF2 and FF6 are still my top favs tho.

God they should just turn every FF into a CG movie that shows the whole plot of the game! IMO, Advent children puts every other CG movie to shame. Goodbye Animatrix, Pixar films, The incredibles and every other shitty CG film that has come out. Square-enix rules! How do they make such awesome graphics??! I mean, the FFX movies are still on par with the best graphics on the newest PS2 games that are coming out! What would also be cool is a FF game were its set in this day and age, with our cities and countries, and somethings gone all wierd like demons coming from another world; or a random religious underground syndicate reveals itself and it has been setting up for a cleansing of the planet or something. Lol god i can think of a lot of bull****. What would also be great is being able to pick who you run around as, no more always being tidus, or barrett and tifa walking out of clouds body. Another good feature would be proper defence animations when attacked, e.g holding up your shield to an aerial blast or dodging and rolling to the side when someone attacks.

I liked toy story 1 and 2 and Nemo and the incredibles they were smart kids flims (smart as in not watered down to the point of boredom like almost all kid cartoons are now adays my god look what they did to One peice a PG13 anime)
Now I have seen FF7 AC 3 or 10 times,it is good if not great,I had soem issues with it tho soem of the fighting was over the top to the point where it was dumb soemtiems, bahamuat SIN looked like a gargoyl, they didnt do meatria or magic correctly (am I the only one to think mertia fits onto weapons and equpiment)....but even with all this the moive was good cant wait to see the butchering..err....dubbing of the dubed version when ever they get it done *L*

Yeah I don't what to download next. Tales of Legendia comes out in 4 days! http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/talesoflegendia/index.html?q=Tale... I'm definitely playing thru that once I finish DQVIII. I haven't been this excited about a game in awhile. I love the Tales Series, and all indications are this is going to be one great RPG. I'm pretty indifferent about "acquiring" PS2 backups, but it's good to actually have something to be excited about. I know a lot of you are waiting for FFXII and KH2, well this is the one I'm waiting for. Woohoo!

Yeah Tales of Legendia looks awesome. Theres something about the fantasy-cartoonish like rpg's that makes me love playing the games. Games like KH, Tales, Radiata Stories and Suikoden. As for DQVIII, for some reason i dont really like that game.... I find it a little boring, but i love the cel shading by Akira and im a huge DBZ fan so thats a bonus. I seem to die to easy? Lol

That's not uncommon in the DQ games. If you're new to the series, you will be building a lot of levels. It's not like most RPG's where you can race through with minimal difficulty. Random battles are frequent and unforgiving. Dare I say DQ games are hard. You need to build levels often to get through the game.

Oh yeah another thing instead of having another Final fantasy film don't you think it will go down better to put it in a series like the awesome Dragonball z (probably spent weeks watching this). :)

I am back!
Quote: What would also be cool is a FF game were its set in this day and age, with our cities and countries, and somethings gone all weird like demons coming from another world; or a random religious underground syndicate reveals itself and it has been setting up for a cleansing of the planet or something
Lol if u want that kinda story line, go to the MegaTen series (Shin Megami Tensei) I know for a fact that Nocturne has a story line almost similar to this.
Now onto other things. Anyone can think of FF7 spinoffs, but how would it compare to the actual game? The storyline in FF7 could easily be expanded upon to further complicity (I was thinking an action rpg, with the main character as Sephiroth, but hey.) Talking bout its pretty fun, not that it'll ever be made. They put enough work into making the current generation of games. I personally enjoy having a new story every time, usually the stories are enjoyable enough to get completely delved into after a few hours. If i wanted FF7 i'd play FF7, the gameplays still fantastic, though the graphics are aged. You shouldnt be fussed about playing the original game again if u love it so much u want a remake. All we can do is look forward to Crisis Core and Dirge Of Cerberus now. Ones a prequel and the others a sequel, both should be enjoyable.
Personally, i've enjoyed all the FF's ive played for more than 2 hours. Except Tactics advance. im not one for strategy RPG's, and the slow gameplay pace pisses me off.
Actually, ive played a few RPG's before FF7, and they werent really anything special compared to the games churned out not (with exceptions to FF4 and Chronotrigger of course.) Theres much more to do in games now, minigames and extra bosses and such. These were both apparent in FF4/Chronotrigger too, where you could fight optional bosses. However in Chronotrigger it actually made a difference to the story, this made me want to do the extra tasks. Its like, i didnt really want to fight Ruby/Emerald weapon, i just fought them for the sake of a challenge.
Dark Cloud 2 was fantastic, the 7 chapters in there spanned around 100 hours of gameplay in themselves, and the Georama system is absolute genius. Add in Spheda, and fishing (which i found difficult) and you got one of the best RPG's on the PS2. There was even an additional 8th chapter which was hard as hell!
The main plot line of KH was fantastic, and the gameplay was great too. But thats what everything revolved around, the main plot. I didnt like there being so little to do after Hollow Bastion. I was frantically searching for something after Sephiroth, but to dismay. And it didnt really put up a challenge, even in Expert Mode (thats the game as a whole, not Sephiroth)
I love complex plots in a game, makes it so much more enjoyable, and gratifying once you do something good lol. I liked the FF8 story, but prefer something like FF7, which i thought was "out there" too. Nomura said that both of those games didnt have any outside influences, they were both intended as sci-fi worlds. Well made sci-fi worlds tho eh? FFX tooks influences from japanese culture, and it was deadly apparent. Then again, Cloud looked a lot more japanese in FF7AC too.
Don't worry bout it, I think that in FFXIII, theres going to be a lot more realism, such as in attacks and blocks. Look out for that one.
Tokijin, im looking forward to Legendia too, though u'll have it before me. Tell me how that one turns out...
Whew, huge post! Ima go lie down for a little while now... Peace! And please, i mean no offence by anything ive said, so dont take it personal lol

Nope TOL is for PS2. It might be released on PSP, I have no idea. There's some great games on the horizon. TOL, Grandia 3 the next week, A new Shadow Hearts game in a couple weeks, KH2 in a month. This is going to be a great time for RPG enthusiasts. I dare say maybe even better than the time leading up to FFXII. There's no telling how these games will turn out, but I don't think they'll disappoint.
