did'nt want to bump this old thread, but I did say I'd get back to you on the results of burning Verbatim x16 at 8x speed rather than 4.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/266746

Yup your bang on, my benq 1640 burnt these at x8 with a nero scan quality ranging between 99-95.

Qite an improvement, cheers

Are those 16x verbs Plus or Dash?

Try 12x on the Mcc-004 verbs. Far better scans than burning them at 4x on my benq 1640.

Saugmon, they are verbatim x16 DVD+R advanced Azo Photo Printable (booktyped DVD-ROM).

I will give one a try at x12 write speed

Last 3 I did at x8 got a Nero scan quality of 99/99/97 whereas at x4 I was getting 95-84.

Only thing I ain't too convinced about is printable media which the Verbs are. Those quality scores dropped to 95/95/93 after printing.

I also bought Taiyo yuden 16x DVD+R Full face printable with the same sort of results high quality then lowered slightly after printing on em.

Got a lot of Maxell DVD-R x8 (ritek G05) non printables and all of these scan well and play no problem whatsoever most over 12 months old.

In contrast I have Ritek (G05) X8 printables and for the first time I
got a scan which had high failures eventually leading to non readable disc (this was after 3 months), this particular disc had a quality scan of 95 when burned.

I'll have to watch the printable's carefully and do a batch scan of them now and then.

cheers Ash

seems like a LOT of people are reporting issues with the printable media on the market today, namely, the RitekG05 printables 8x DVD-R...there are various threads filled with VERY poor scans of RitekG05 printables and person after person reporting failures and "coasters" using said media...

the RitekG05s, FOR ME PERSONALLY, are the Ridata ones, NON-Printable and they are well over 2 years old since time of burning, they still hold respectable quality scan scores to this day...i never tried the printable RitekG05s, but i believe the stories and scans of member forkndave when he tells it like it is...

i'm still waiting for my shipment of the 16x TY DVD+R YUDEN000T03s...mine are not going to be printable on those either, but when i get them...i will test burn a few at various speeds and put up the scans here on AfterDawn... :)

especially on the Benq 1640, i have a GOOD gut feeling that my scores will be MUCH higher @8x and higher speeds (ie 12x or 16x)...but, i'll try ONE (1) at 4x just to see for myself... :)

may u have future success ashj, hope my initial suggestion of burning @8x has PROVEN to you without a shadow of a doubt that on the Benq 1640, NEVER burn 8x or 16x rated QUALITY MEDIA @4x or lower...the scans DO NOT LIE :)

Yes doc,

My Maxell riteks and hitachi's were well in front of the Verbs when I burnt them at x4, burning at x8 certainly made a big diff, big thanks for the tip off.

I'm with you when I'm burning a personal backup I use non printables, but friends and family like the full package (printed disc, amaray case, insert etc).

Funny thing is my pioneer dvd player does'nt even blink when it plays that 1 rogue Ritek G05 printable.

It maybe that the dye layer is not at fault here, but the ink when the disc is printed on. (evidence seems to suggest this from my Nero Quality scans which deteriorate by a few % as soon as printed)

Maybe Lightscribe is the way to go for stability, ah only for some hindsight.

anyway cheers again

The only issues on full hub inkjet printable media for me is too slow of burn speed. The backups that I burned at 2.4x have too many read errors, therefore giving me crc errors when I try to re-rip them.If anybody out there has a benq 1640,beware of burning slow!

Those MCC-004's are another MID code that gave me issues on the slower 2.4x. 8x were my best scans, then 12x.They were a heck of a lot less errors than 4x.

Ashj: You should be ok with those low to mid 90's on those printable backups. I've had some horendous scans on some cmags, but my new magnavox el cheapo stand alone played it perfect. I guarantee that some of those very picky/older stand alones will have trouble with the low scoring backups.

I've got the HP 640c lightscribe bundled with my pc last summer. Those HP backups were way inferior to my benqs. I couldn't even re-rip some of my Yuden000-T02 because of read errors on them. I replaced it immediately for my original benq 1620. After toying around with my dad's lightscribe,I decided to swap out my litey 167t and put that HP back in.But using it for lightscribe and reading only. They look ok,but I want to try the shiny inkjet printables to see how they turn out. I use Verbatim +8x lightscribe, with a fine MID code of MCC-003.

I will have to try scanning after I burn the movie with my 1640,and re scan it after the lightscribing. That can be my weekend project!

Fully agree with the Benq 1640, the burner is excellent.

Was just thinking perhaps lightscribe would be a more stable way of getting those graphics onto the disc as opposed to inkjet.

its very Kool that your giving it a go Saugmon, I'm very curious to see your results over say 2 or 3 discs to see if the scan quality remains constant on lightscribe.
