You don't need a mod chip if you want to play movie DVD-R on your ps2 but you need one to play games.

You don't give enough informations, there are so many ways to burn a DVD movie and you don't tell me how do you backup your movies.

Try using RecordNowMax(make an data disk with your video_ts and audio_ts in your hard drive) instead of Nero(Some compatibilities issues with DVD players), if it doesn't work it is because of the media brand you use.

The 2 bests burners by pc magazine:
sony dru and pioneer A-05
I have the Pioneer A-05 and I'm very please with it. Made more than 140 movies backup and work also great for ps2 games. And I'm using very cheap media (0.78 each). I didn't need the +r feature because many people including myself agree that a good DVD-R will always be better than a good DVD+R,I mean better by more compatibles and the DVD-R will work on all ps2 versions, they are also alot more cheaper. But if you think that you will use +r discs go for the Sony(it supports both -r/+r). But you can't be wrong about those 2 burners, they are both very good.
If you want to know more about -r/+r just click this link:

It could be the playstation every now and then with real movies it says disc error. So far it has said it with all dvd-r's. WHat did you have to get fixed? And how much did it cost?

Nero is bad for compatibility.
I used nero initially but I have 4 standalones (different models).
I found that just one format (in nero) would NOT be compatible with ALL my standalones.
I then changed to recordnowmax, just burned the VIDEO_TS folder as data disc (as joblow said) and ALL worked fine including my PS2 (which would not before)
BTW : What about the region code (of backup/PS2) do they match up?
Hope this helps

I will try record max now. Does anyone know how much it is or where i can get a good deal on it? Because the dvd's don't work on my standalone at home (samsung dvd-m301), they worked on one at school and at my girl friends house so i guess its either the media or nero. Thanks for all the help.

You can download a trial version at www.orlogix.com, try it first before buying.
Prices are available on the site, cannot remember how much I paid, BUT IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY.

Ok so i bought recordnow max and it still does not work on my playstation. I also upgraded my version of nero and still nothing. I have not tried it on my standalone yet. Do all playstation 2 play dvd-r? Also does the media really make that much difference? And can someone let me know what is a good kind to buy so this compatability thing doesn't happen again.

Media is a big issue.
Recommended media is the media which uses the ritek dye G03/G04, it is fairly expensive but still cheap.
Check out www.blankdiscshop.co.uk for dvd media.
I am in the uk and I use the above for my media supplies. Service is great and price, well I cannot find cheaper

Not all PS2 play DVD-R
It depends if you have an early version.
Flip Top PS2 Cover - £30 roughly I think.
A screwdriver , a piece of tape (to keep the ribbon out of the way) and your all done.
As far as I believe...
PS2 Forum will tell you more.

There are only 2 differnet flip top lids as far as I'm aware.
1 for versions 1-4 & the other is for versions 4-7.
