I have been having plenty of trouble burning even using verbatim discs with shrink/nero. It is a new computer with a Benq dvd dc DQ60 burner. I know that reading forums that this is a crappy burner but even so, when I published the log here it was recommended that i update my firmware from mrcd to mrec. I downloaded the mrec but have been a little leary to install after reading about frying burners etc.
My question to the experts. Is this the latest and the right firmware that I should install. It is in zip format but does xp automatically unzip and then install it for me?
thanks for the help

Don't be afraid to install firmware updates, it very simple. XP has it's own extracting utility.

Create a folder on your desktop and call it DQ60_Update, put the zip file in it. Open the folder and right click on the zip file and choose extract all, the contents should be extracted within the DQ60_Update folder you created. Find the update file and run it, follow any directions given, you may be asked to reboot.

Make sure you set Nero to burn at 4x, and Nero is up to date.

Yup, that is the latest firmware. I held out for a month or two before I first tried to update my firmware. I had just bought a new NEC drive and didn't want to ruin it, but I bit the bullet and went on with it, followed the instructions and it was no problem at all...took about 5 minutes including the reboot.

Did what you said and it worked just fine (I think). At least my burner still works. Tried a couple of movies and they worked as well.
thanks again very much.

A strange thing does happen with dvd decypter. After I do a full backup with Shrink using create an .iso file and burn with decrpter, it encodes just fine and then when I put a verbatim dvd +r blank media in the drive and push burn, I get a message saying that it cannot burn and something about no media found. (don't remember the exact message) but if I push cancel 5 times in succession all of a sudden it recognizes the media and begins a burn. Then a get a message at the end that says the burn was successful. Any explanation for this do you think? Not a big problem as i just continue to click on cancel until it get recognized.

thanks to everyone for all their help. Guess I was just a little nervous having not done this before.

Glad you got it working... Was it the firmwaer update that got it working again... or was it the settings in shrink on your laptop that I said about?

I should imagine that there's a software conflict somewhere and that's why it's taking DVD Decrypter a while to recognise that there's blank media in the drive... possible nero's INCD, but could be windows autorun feature trying to so something too. Do you have any other burning software on your computer?
