Okay-I set shrink to 4300 so I don't wite too close to the edge. I have the newest firmware-JSOD. I upped the RAM on my desktop to 512MB and I tried burn settings from 4x-8x. I even disconnected my computer from my home network, shut off my screen saver and power saver on the monitor. Oh-and I downloaded clean tool and loaded the latest Nero 7. Alas-same ugly message. Is my USB connection or computer antiquated in some way that won't allow it to work with these large video files? Anybody have any other ideas? Here is the error log:

Hey frank,
It looks like you've followed our suggestions and are going about this correctly, but because of something stated makes me wonder.

Quote:
"Is my USB connection or computer antiquated in some way that won't allow it to work "

You're using an old computer which most likely has a usb 1.1 interface/connection (operates at 12 MB/s), and are using it with an extermal burner that is really designed to be used with a usb 2.0 interface/connection(operates at speeds up to 480 MB/s). Usually this isn't a problem because all usb 2.0 devices are designed to be backwards compatable, but in this case it maybe be an issue.

What you can try is purchase a usb 2.0 PCI card with at least two external connectors and connect the external player to it and see if this solves the problem (try besybuy, circuit city, compusa, etc..), these cards are cheap $25-$50 and work extremely well.

You may have purchased more memory but you are still using it all, you need to give Nero more to work with, close down some of your other running programs.

Your drive is not accepting the instructions that Nero is giving it, probably do to the fact of your USB setup on your comp. Make sure you are running SP2 in Windows and you may want to look at the 2.0 card for the computer and see if this works.

frankwb1,
The problem below is another: The first problem is causing the second as the burnwer does not like the CMC Disk as they are some of the worst on the market. Try Verbatim. If you want to do the CMC then either burn @ 2X or 1X

1.Recorder: LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1673S, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AE1

Really slow the burn down to 4X

Well-ok-let me see. There are no High Speed USB controllers on this computer. But I thought the new burners were backwards compatible-but I do get this balloon that pops up from XP that recommends I install a high speed USB controller on the computer for the "mass storage device". Also I am going to run out to Best Buy and get better media. One thing I don't understand-how do u change burn speeds when using shrink with Nero enabled in it. It seems to automatically go to 8x with no adjustments possible.

To set burn speed in Shrink go to: Backup>Burn settings> Burn Speed> and you set the speed here

Thanks for looking at this stuff guys. I've got good news and bad news. The good news that I can backup my DVD's with shrink and Nero no problem now. The bad news is that is about all I can do. When I try to drop a video into Nero(say .AVI or .mpeg file)from my hard drive it will not burn successfully. But I guess I will post that on the Nero forum. Also I can't lower the burn speed down any lower than 6x-is that because I am using 16x Verbatim disks?

frankwb1 ,
I have a 16X burner and use 16X blank media and I can set the speed in Shrink and Nero all the way down to 1X. Try just putting a blank disk in the computer and once Nero and Shrink recog. it you should be able to set it

I purchased some good Verbatim media(4x) and now everything is burning great! I have quite a large CMC coaster collection now-but I'm learning.I do have one nagging question though. Will I be able to put an internal DVD burner into this computer? Since my high speed 2.0 USB port is external my internal burner may not work right? Or is there a way around this?

frankwb1 ,
The internal burner is not connected via a usb port. Change the MITSUMI CR-48X5TE CD burner on your computer to a DVD burner. Just connect the cables ( power and IDE) exactly like the cd-burner was connected and you should be good to go( make sure though it is the master on the secondary IDE Channel). If you are unsure then have a friend do it for you

frankwb1,
Good burners as Plextor, Pioneer, Nec, Lite-on, BenQ. Any of those should work for you
