I'm aware of the disable auto protect feature. however after an update from norton, I'm not sure of when this stupid feature was added, but there's some new security alert screen that pops up stating the auto protect is turned off, duh no kidding that's exactly what I want it to do. the problem is, even after checking/unchecking the box on that pop and clicking OK up it goes away and then comes back a few seconds later, there's no way to get rid of it and the warning window hogs resorces I can see exactly what it's using in task manager. I'm always reading in the forums here to turn off virus protection during the burn process, does that mean(in the case of norton anyway because that's what I use) just the auto protect, or is there some other way to turn off norton AV, do you guys mean to uninstall the virus protection every time, am I missing something? I've looked at symantecs website I can't find anything about disabling that pop up or anything. if anyone can help I'll greatly appreciate it. please no "welcome to norton AV" type remarks. thanks

I never turn off my anti-virus when I burn. I will make sure that I update the definitions so that it doesn't download while I'm in the middle of a burn.

You could just right click in your taskbar and shut it off/exit/disable if you need to. More important that it doesn't run a scan or update while you're burning.

I always disable it when I burn. It uses a lot of system resources while it is running. Just remember to turn it back on before accessing the internet the next time.

Or better yet, remove Norton all together and get AVG for free which uses less resources and is rated very well next to the big boys!

I'm in the in Zone Alarm camp.
Although I use the full security suite, there is a free version as well.
I do not let Norton touch any of my PCs any more, there are too many niggles which can ruin the running of a PC.
I know none of these answers so far tell you how to stop this "feature" whilst keeping Norton as your protection, but maybe it?s a good opportunity to re-evaluate keeping it on your system.

I found the answer to problem in the software forums. there were three files I had to contain in a seperate folder. who ever posted said their info was from norton. long story short it worked. I don't know about the person who replied that said they leave their anti virus on while they're burning, do that at your own risking a failed burn, it may not have happened yet, and that's a big yet. I've used AVG and it's great and I'm sure the full version of zone alarm is great to, I've used their free version before and it's great. with norton it's not as easy as right clicking then click disable any more, there's an additional pop up that reminds you auto protect is not running and when click it to go away it just comes back, even when you disable in the task mananger. it was anoying the hell out of me because you have to drag it down past the bottom of the screen just to get it out of your way, meanwhile it's hogs a bunch of resources in doing so. thanks for the help guys

I have NOD32. It only runs scans during the night when I'm sleeping. It auto updates when I boot up only. Been that way for a couple of yrs and never had a problem.
