Hi Guys...I'm totally new to this as you'll probably guess from reading my post more!

Just got a new super duper PC with a built in DVD and CD rewriter. Can work the cd rewriter fine. Just tried the DVD rewriter onto a DVD-RW but the DVD was protected which has raised a few questions.

I have some dvd's of my toddler which I wanted to copy and send to family...they too may be protected (cos it was a company that took them, superimposed him onto various jungle and farm backgrounds etc)... and they include a warning if I try to copy them I might destroy the original! So what do I do?

What exactly does a DVD rewriter drive do then if not copy DVD's? I know you can download software than kind of "unprotects" them for copying but are any of these downloads reliable? And if so, which?

Can I just burn digital still pix or AVI movies taken with my digital camera onto DVD-RW discs?? My old PC just had a cd rewriter but that allowed me (via my digital camera software package) to create video cd's with music tracks to each album, which I could then play on my DVD. How do I do that now (the original software package stopped working with my old PC and now won't work with my new one).

I feel so ignorant!!! Any advice/help would be much appreciated and is this the wrong time to ask for any advice on buying a DVD Recorder/Player. My old (3 yrs old) Toshiba DVD player seems to have taken a dislike to certain DVD's! The sound keeps fading in and out of my kiddy DVD's but works perfectly well with all others!
The same kiddy DVD discs work perfectly on my PC but not on my in-law's DVD player which is also a Toshiba but a model up from mine!
Could this just be a fault with Toshiba DVD players? Have cleaned the player etc but still the same prob and the source of the kiddy DVD's we're playing is (allegedly) reliable...ie Amazon!

Sorry to have gone on a bit! But HELP!

Regards... Celine

celinego,
Can you copy the DVD to the HD and then view the video there. I really doubt that copying the video to HD is going to ruin the DVD as the company might just be wanting to sell more DVD's of the event to you. You can D/L (free):

DVDFAB Decrypter: www.DVDIdle.com/free.htm.

DVDDecrypter: www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

AnyDVD ( not free) but it does have a 21 day trial version: http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

Check to see w/ you camera manuf if there is a free program they produce that you can use or use Microsoft's Movie Maker: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

The DVD for the kids is probably done on cheap blank media and that is the problem it sounds like you are having.

Thanks you Car.Mike for replying. I will indeed follow your suggestions at the weekend. Fortunately, my new PC came with Windows Movie Maker (although previously I'd been using a Pixella suite for that) but that just allowed me to load the videos, edit them and then DV out again to the original tape which I could then connect to the TV and video record! Such a long winded way of doing things!!

So, if the home movies copying works, the next thing I'll try is to copy my toddler's "official" DVDs to the hard drive (I;m assuming that's what 'means'?!

Will let you know how I get on and if it works, I'll be indebted to you! Now, next question, is there a way I can actually copy 'bought' DVDs? Not because I want to resell them anywhere, purely for family sharing? I mean, hubby watches a movie that he thinks his dad would like (very rare)...or toddler has a DVD interactive game which his nursery would like? I guess that is breaking copywright but it would be so rare for me. And I also guess it doesn't matter how rare ...if it's copywrighted/protected it for a piracy reason so I should just go and buy a second copy of these instead?

Many thanks and regards.........Celine

celinego ,
Go to the site below as one of the members here did those guides. They are well done w/ pictures so it is pretty hard to get lost. Now I want you to open the ST guide as that is DVDFAB Decrypter/ Shrink and DVDDecrypter. All freeware so you have lost $0.00. On the site is a place to D/L all of the programs you will need. Just follow the guides and all if well. If you have a problem then tell us your followed BBMayo's guide and you are having problems.......

Car.Mike, thank you yet again for another response. Hopefully I can try all this out at the weekend (difficult with the said child hanging onto my coat-tails)! As soon as I do, I'll let you know the result. Just wanted to say thank you so much for responding and being so kind to me in your replies!
Best wishes......Celine
