Reboot is not required at all.
It depends on HD size and Memory available as to how many you can store.

Back-up as many as you can in a row with reputable software/or method/or what ever works for you. If you have conflicting software a reboot might be the ticket for success, who's to say. It may cause failure. I don't mind a reboot now and then to increase the ease of operation.

I recently with rebates upgraded RAM $29 per 512. Easy way to increase the odds/bang for buck. I run 2g RAM on main and 1.5 on secondary computer. Look how much you can upgrade. Not that it's necessary just more efficient and more chance for success with video.

Could of been a speck of dust on the blank. Does this drop off happen every time?

More than likely media related... I have done as many as 8 backups of different movies in succession without a reboot without any ill effects...
