HD Advance 3.0 immediately crashing

I just tried HD Advance 3.0 for the first time, after installing a 40 gig Maxtor drive (and making sure the jumper was appropriately set to master). I see the "Playstation 2" logo, then hear the hard drive whirr to life... and then I'm booted into the browser. When I select the disc icon, the same thing happens: I see the "Playstation 2" logo, then hear the hard drive whirr to life... and then I'm booted into the browser. The disk I'm using worked on my computer this afternoon (I stole it from my desktop). It's not explicitly on the compatibility list, but it's a Maxtor, and it fits. Any ideas? I would expect that I'd be able to go into the HD Advance program and format the drive, or at least it would tell me that it can't access the drive?

take the hd out and see if the disc will load (might be a bad disc).

I tried that already. The same thing happens, whether I'm using the CD or the DVD.
