Even if you buy the same kind of disc the quality of the disc doesn't always come out the same. Try burning at a slower speed that should fix the problem and another thing switch the type of dvd that your burning onto. Try using verbatim or taiyo yuden. There better quality disc and you can get them cheap at http://www.supermediastore.com

Interesting. Sony (Made in Japan) is Taiyo Yuden. The Taiwan Sony carries a Sony manufacturer code. I've found the MIT Sony to work very well. In fact my last 50 or so backups are on the MIT Sony discs. So, I doubt the problem is Sony media unless part of a bad batch was purchased. You can try another brand just in case. It's not as though you can't use them later. Using an RW makes sense to prevent wasted discs while solving the problem, but some standalone players still don't support RW discs. One other thought, does the Roxio have Drag to Disc or another batch writing application? If so, make sure it's turned off when trying to record. On some systems it had to be deleted.

Remember to leave out batch writing software, if possible. I had an older version of Roxio and was lucky enough to be able to just turn it (Drag to Disc) off while recording with other apps. Not saying that's the problem, but it doesn't hurt to leave out known causes for problems. For a real clean uninstall of Roxio, some versions need Roxizap.

Do a check to see if it's the software. While you have Roxio deleted from the system, go to http://www.slysoft.com and download AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 and use them to backup a movie. Delete the Alcohol as well. It doesn't take that long and you said you noticed the problem started soon after installing Alcohol. If it turns out to be software related, then you can install the apps one at a time and test to see which is the culprit. Out of curiosity, how much free space do you have left on your hard drive?

10GB is cutting it close with some of the big movies. Having a bit more than the size of the DVD is required with a lot of apps. A good rule of thumb is twice the size of the DVD. The system still has to have some freespace to run and not lock up. Check the minimum requirements for the software and try to exceed them at least a small amount. It's at minimum that most problems creep in.

I'd suggest freeing more space or buying some and give it another shot. How large is the DVD you're trying to backup?

Look at the supported tags above the Message box when you do a reply. That should clue you in with the img tags for image. You need capture software, check out Capturewiz at Download.com. Then you store the saved image on a site like ImageShack and use the link that goes direct to the image. With ImageShack that has been the one on the bottom, but read to be sure.

By the way, is it true there's about as much sun in Glasgow as there is an absence of fog in London? ;) I'm enjoying the rain here in the Appalachians for now. In your neck of the woods they might say highlands, we say mountains. ;) Just a few flood warnings for the region. It's either raining or snowing all the time it seems. Usually Spring, Summer and Fall are better, but even those can get squirrely in this region. Just far enough south and close enough to the coast to have enjoyed the arse end of a lot of hurricane weather this summer, high winds and rain. Nothing killer, but annoying when you want to be out on the motorcycle.

Space? If the m is MB and g is GB, then the 4 is more relevant. There is no encoding for a file that size to DVD5. So all you have to have is enough space to do the conversion. Without getting too tight figure the 4GB plus what your system needs to operate. I always try to leave a few GB of space so the system can build it's temp files and have room to flex. The 10GB you have should be sufficient on this one. So that appears to eliminate that possibility.

The bike is a little Honda "scooter", the 750cc Aero. Black of course; decked out with studded leather seat, saddlebags, and custom seat; floorboards instead of pegs; along with a Memphis shades windshield. I've made up my mind to forget efficiency and get a bigger bike though. I'll see what my finances look like in the spring, after the tax collectors have had their way with my accounts. LOL

As we Yanks have a tendency of saying, "sounds like it headed south"; in reference to the PC. We never did discuss the specs of the system in use to do the burning. What are the CPU and speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size and free space, and the operating system? What brand and model is the PC? Sounds like something other than media is coming into play, as you're starting to suspect.

Good luck
If you are interested in doing many of the big movies, it's best to have a good fast CPU, plenty of RAM and a good amount of hard drive free space. You may want to consider an upgrade, that's why I asked about the equipment. A decent PC should only cost a few hundred pounds, Euros, dollars or whatever. If you're into wine, wowen and song, don't bother. LOL

I'm running a 3.4GHZ P4 Northwood, HT-Dual Channel, 2X1GB matched Corsair RAM, 800MHz FSB, and 2 HDD (250GB+300GB). That's plenty of processor speed and ample resources. That prevents many of the problems suffered by those working with minimal systems.
