hi all,
are there any free programs available to convert mpeg-4 to avi? I recently downloaded a couple tv show episodes that are mpeg-4 and cannot play them on my media center.
Thank You

You should be able to play MP4 files in Media Player you just need to have a decoder installed that can read MP4 files....

If you Install "FFDShow" and configure it to decode "MP4" files then you should be able to watch this File in Media Player...

If that doesn"t work then the MP4 files might be "Quicktime Mp4" in which case if you Installed the Latest Quicktime Player you Might be able to play them.....

Good Luck

mp4 is mp4. Doesn't matter if it was created by QuickTime, Nero or whatever. As well as a decoder you also need a splitter.

Haali's splitter and FFDShow should be all you need. FFDShow can decode MPEG-4 as well as AVC and AAC. CoreAVC is more efficent though if your mp4 contains AVC.

When people say MPEG-4 though, they don't always mean mp4.

Well I can tell you this for a fact not all MP4 Codecs decode all MP4 Container Formats because FFDShow will Not Decode MP4 files created by Quicktime only quicktime will decode them...

Even to Decode Quicktime MP4 files with TMPGEnc you need the QT Mov Plugin installed(I just Tried it) so in this sence there is a different in MP4 container formats....

mp4 is mp4.
MPEG-4 video is MPEG-4 video.
MPEG-4 audio is MPEG-4 audio.

That is the whole point of having specs like MPEG-4. Doesn't matter if something is created with QuickTime, MeGUI ro whatever.

Where you might be getting confused is that FFDShow is basically just a decoder (also inclues encoders and muxers). It doesn't contain any splitter/parser filters. So to playback, you need a splitter like Haali installed. Already covered all of that though.

The splitter takes the mp4 file and sends the raw audio/video streams to the decoder. If you don't have a splitter installed, then an mp4 won't play, even though FFDShow can decode all the contained streams. Same goes for all other containers; AVI, mov, mkv, ogm, ogg, etc.
