Look under guides here at Afterdawn to learn how to use these two excellent programs. However, neither has been updated and never will be updated again, for newer copy protections seen most often on Sony/Columbia new movie releases. Therefore, you may need additonal programs or steps. All the info you seek is available at AD.

It's unclear, is the error occuring during the ripping/encoding process or the write process? What error is it?

What are you trying to burn (an ISO image or video files) and what application are you using to burn with?

Does your system have the necessary resources? What is the brand and model PC, the RAM, usable ram amount if you know it, hard disk size and how much free space, and what CPU and operating system? Decrypter and Shrink are both small apps, so the downloads shouldn't have been a problem. Just in case, delete what you have, download from here at AD to insure your apps aren't damaged. There are some good guides at http://www.dvdshrink.info that give a good run through of the apps. Click Help in Shrink and select Help Topics, then Guides. The links are still good, just click on the Shrink Guide links. I'm surprised at the number of people unaware of those guide links.

you should try DVD Shrink with DVD43. it should work for you the only thing you need to do is to start dv43 wait for the sad face to turn to a smile then open shrink and hit back up

Little problem, daworz hasn't come back to communicate with us.

What is "it", there were two programs mentioned? We need to know that before we can really start figuring out the problem. Shrink may have nothing to do with it. New encryption systems can lock up DVD Decrypter, but wouldn't affect Shrink if it was only using ripped files. But insufficient system resources could cause problems for Shrink. Solving problems sometimes needs to be interactive.

Though DVD Decrypter was the best of it's type for decryption, it's inability to break the newer encryption systems is a problem. For newer movies updated apps are needed. DVD43 is a viable option, though not one I like. The retail app, AnyDVD is far superior and is updated as needed on a much more regular basis. The only appeal of DVD43 over AnyDVD is that the DVD43 is free. No more than AnyDVD costs though, that shouldn't be a concern if a person is going to do a lot of backups for their new movies.

If that 3.27 is for GB, then there is a big problem. As a rule of thumb, you need twice the space of the the DVD to be backed up. You may get by with less, but it has to be somewhat larger than the file being done. You have to have room for the file if you use Decrypter for a rip. Then you need space for the temp file generated during the encode. There you're looking at almost twice the original DVD. Then you have to have enough space for the system to operate without locking up. Sounds like you need to free up some space or add a new HD. Those are cheap now and you can even pick one up at most Wal Mart stores. External ones are easier, but they're a bit more expensive. Internal ones install easily. Size limitations are only an issue with older operating systems. I have about 500GB of HD in use on my system.

@daworz,

You state this error: "focus servo error"

To me this says that your drive just doesn't like the media (brand of that is) you're using. There are two things I suggest you do:

First and most important update your burner's firmware, firmware updates add increased media compatibility, this alone could resolve your problem/issue. Click on the link and enter your burner's model# in the search field to see what the latest version is, click on the latest version to get it, follow the instruction for updating.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

Note: since you have dvd decrypter installed, you can use it's check for firmware updates feature that's built into it. It can check for you and help get it.

Second is to try another brand of media (try sony, verbatim, etc..), make sure it's manufactured in japan (try staples for sony DVD+R media).

Keep the write speed at 4x, but not greater that 8x.

What is the free hard drive space when you go to encode? That is with your source already on the hard drive. State whether your reading is in per cent or GB.

daworz,
I went directly to the HP website, it looks like you have and external DVD burner, correct? (HP DVD writer 200e USB interface). I believe that this writer has a max write speed of 2.4x (very slow), so set the write speed to 2.4x when burning.

The latest firmware version is 1.72
Click on the link and follow the direction for updating.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?dlc=en&l...

If you installed the software included with the DVD Writer using this utility can help you with determining what firmware version you have, as well as have it look for and install the updates for you. Here is the link.

What brobear wants to know (I believe) is exactly how much hard drive space you have left on that 40GB hard drive. To check goto my computer, right click on the 40GB hard drive and choose properties. There look for the amount of free space in giga bytes (GB).

With XP it will be listed under the General tab in the Local Disk Properties window that opens when you click Properties for your HD.

If I didn't mention it before, as a rule of thumb have about twice the space of the source for most encoder apps. Some actually take more, but you should be safe here. Give it a shot and see what happens. Use the disk clean in Programs, Accessories, System tools and then reboot before you start. We want to give it every chance.
