I think you've already figured out you need file conversion software. M-Jpeg and DivX are the two most commonly used codecs for AVI transport. So, you need to determine the codec type and then convert. DivXtoDVD is a common conversion app. I'm not really up on all the apps that will do this task. I had a friend that was talking about DVDSanta for multiple format conversion. Not too good for recording, but it did good at converting formats. Then of course there are programs for converting DVD to DivX, SVCD and the like. Nero has some conversion utilities, but again, I'm not sure how good for your purposes.

CD is VCD or SVCD format. With it burned on CD and DVD, I'm not sure what you're up to. Many standalone DVD players won't play CD formats and you can record things to DVD discs that won't play on a DVD player. Only some of the newer players handle multiple formats. Is the program you're using to play the files on your PC for DVD or what? What is the name of the player software? What software did you use to burn the CDs and DVDs you've done? The first thing you need to do is figure what codec is being used. Look the definition up in the glossary so you fully understand the term. Look at AVI and some of the other terms as well. It may give you a better handle on what you're doing and help in explaining your situation.

Step one is to convert the files in AVI to DVD. The conversion software depends on the codec stored in AVI. AVI is only a container. Once converted to DVD format, it can be burned to DVD. Also the DVD has to be in the correct form. VOB, BUP, and IFO files with the correct structurer are in a folder file named VIDEO_TS.

easy, download VSO DivX to DVD (Free) or WinAVI Video Converter (not free)
Both programs will convert your AVI's to DVD format with no problems, I use them both, then use Nero to burn them.

Supporting advice, thanks. I'd already suggested the DivXtoDVD. I'm not familiar with the WinAVI, so that should be another to check out. Do they have a trial for that one?

If it's in DVD format and is too big for your disk just use DVD Shrink to resize it, when it's shrunk Nero will automatically start burning.
There is a trial period for WinAVI video converter brobear, but I can't remember how long...... 30 days??

Okay, it sounds as though you're in a CD format and the file is just too large. If the structure is right, you can possibly use InterVideo's DVDCopy 4. You can get the full function trial at http://www.intervideo.com Just browse to the source and select the format you want the files encoded to. If it's too large for one CD, it will divide and put it on as many as needed. DivX is more compact and records to CD and plays on some standalone players. My Philips supports the format. Or select DVD, it may do the conversion and burn to a DVD for you. But if the files are small, that might be a waste of media.

the 1st thing you need to do is download avicodec, run your file through it and post the results for all to see. Then once you have given us the details we can supply you with the best possible outcome.
brobear has suggested divx to dvd, go with that as winavi is a bit finicky depending on what sort of avi file you have.
heres a link to the free version:
http://www.filepedia.com/video_software/dvd-r_tools/vso_divxtodvd...
You need to upgrade your nero as the recode version is probably the one that is the easiest to use.
Go to the link below and click on the pack 2 which has nero recode:
http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/nero-up.php
install the nero.
Let us know when you are ready to proceed.........
@brobear: nice to see your still here man, catchya later

The trials are free for 20 to 30 days. DVDCopy 4 is obvious just looking at the interface. Nero has Recode as an encoder, there are a number of guides at the Nero.com site. No limit on Nero trial downloads. You have to download a new one when the old expires though. In Shrink under Help select Help Topics and then select guides, the links are still good. The one at DVDShrink.info is a handy interactive guide. Trials and freeware. That should keep the cost down and you have guides except for DVDCopy4. DivXtoDVD is free and someone mentioned WinAVI had a trial. So, the big thing is finding out the codec in AVI and then using the right conversion app for the encoder you want to use. I don't know what else I can add at this point. Any more and I'll be getting confused.

not to bad, i see your starting to get a handle on these bothersome AVI encoding problems.I dont advocate Nero as an encoder mainly because i prefer an app that is designed 100% for encoding.Nero on the other hand has so many functions that i seem to only get about 75% success rate while DivX to dvd 100%.
The newer version 1.99 doesnt have the same problems as does the free version with decoder issues due to it being regularly updated but it is still a good application.I think i said 12 months ago that cucusofts AVI to mpeg converter was the best but now its tied between this and mainconcepts mpeg encoder.
what have you been doing?

Sounds like you have more experience than I do. I'm still a novice, but I'm familiar with the software. You're right about not using Nero for conversions, but it does good encodes and burning.
