Hi,

I have a TOSHIBA CD/DVD writer (SD-R5372).
When I burn a cd I get the error below.
I tried updating the firmware of the writer, and got the latest version of NEro as well(6.6.0.18).
When I tried burning after the updates he completed but still gave an eroor in the end (the same sort of error; could not perform fixation ,...) but the cd was actually ok.
The second time I tried burning it didn't work again, with the same errors.

In the device manager I see, besides my Toshiba, 3 generic DVD-ROM SCSI CDRom Devices. Don't know what that means.

I don't really know what to do anymore.

Please help, thank you very much.

The first thing you should do is enable DMA for all the devices shown below.

=== Scsi-Device-Map ===
CdRomPeripheral : TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1912 nvatabus Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : TOSHIBA CD/DVDW SD-R5372 nvatabus Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 6B300S0 nvatabus Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 4 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 4 ID 1 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 4 ID 2 DMA: Off

Here's a guide that will show you how:
http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm

Question, do you really have 3 additional DVD-ROM drives installed?

CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 4 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 4 ID 1 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 4 ID 2 DMA: Off

If not, uninstall the IDE channel that the device is connected to:
To do that, open Device Manager as follows. Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tag, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, right-click on IDE Channel, click on Uninstall.

Reboot to make the changes active and permanent.

After booting Windows will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the DVD (or CD) drive. This Plug-n-Play process can take a little while, so give it a minute after the boot process finishes.

log reads:
19:48:05 #32 CDR -1135 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1294
Write error

19:48:05 #33 TRANSFER -19 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1294
Could not perform Fixation

It looks like the drive is having a problem trying to write to the media you're using (just doesn't like it), try a different brand like Sony.

Thank you already.
I'll have a look at the DMA-thing.
I used Sony already.

I'll post back when I tried enabling DMA.

Cheers.

Hi there,

I don't seem to be able to change this DMA.

In the device manager I have 3 IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. In the 3rd one (NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA Controller) I see a tab Primary channel. There my dvd-rom is mentioned as master drive and the writer as slave drive.

There an option "Let BIOS select transfer mode" is checked.
There is a drop down list for transfer mode. It is set to "Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra33".

I can change that when I uncheck that option about the BIOS.

What do I do? Change something in the BIOS(what do I change there?) or uncheck the option and select somthing else from the drop-down. Other options there are: Ultra DMA 1, Ultra DMA 0, Mulit-Word DMA 0, 1 and 2 and PIO mode.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Something I just noticed when trying a DVD. He says he can only write to CD-R/RW disks.

What does this have to do with it, how is that possible? Any ideas?

This is really getting beyond me.

That's not right....
TOSHIBA CD/DVDW SD-R5372 F: CDRom6 : this drive is a CD as well as a DVD burner, and should be able to write to DVD disks. It's capable of an Ultra DMA speed of 33.3MB/s

I looked at the toshiba website, the firmware they list for this drive is TU55, I suggest using this version...

get it here:
http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=818200000022000000010000659...

you can look at the specs for it here..
http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=818200000007000000010000659...

As far as DMA:
If you can, enable DMA support in the BIOS, then save changes and reboot.

Just to make sure, uncheck the option to let the bios decide and select ultra dma 2, set the devices for highest DMA mode available, reboot, check again to make sure DMA has been enabled for the devices.

If you're still having problems with enabling DMA, then uninstall both primary and secondary channels, reboot, The OS will reinstall them after a reboot, go back and set them both for DMA mode as described, reboot again an recheck.

Also you state that you have a "NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA Controller", you might want to update the chipset drivers for this controller as it could solve the DMA issue if the above procedure does not, just click on the link to go to the Nvidia site, start by choosing: Platform/nforce Drivers, then select the driver that matches what you have, select the OS, get the download and update (just follow the directions)
