For editing DVDReMake and DVDLabPro are said to be good. I don't know about trials and these are retail.

Isn't TMPGEnc mainly for file conversion and not editing?

hey brobear here are the most frequently asked questions concerning TMPGEnc dvd author:think you want point 10

TMPGEnc DVD Author (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q1. I would like to know about updates, new products, etc.
A. Please look at the company website. There you can find information on updates, FAQ, and other support features.
http://www.pegasys-inc.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q2. It seems you cannot convert AVI files to DVD-Video?
A. It is necessary to convert the format to MPEG-1/2 format based on the DVD video standard. This function, however, is not available in this software. To change the AVI file into an MPEG-1/2 file based on the DVD video standard, we recommend using our company's MPEG-1/2 encoder TMPGEnc Plus.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q3. Which MPEG1/2 files can be used as input?
A. Please look at the TMPGEnc DVD Author Specifications.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q4. How much free harddisc is necessary?
A. To write a full 4.7GB DVD-R disc, it is necessary with at least 9.4GB free space.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q5. How can I write a "DVD folder" to a DVD-R?
A. If you write the outputted "VIDEO_TS" folder and the "AUDIO_TS" folder to a DVD-R using DVD writing software, you can use is as a DVD-Video disc.
If you do not use the DVD Writing Tool included in TMPGEnc DVD Author, please follow the below guidelines.

For the below products, please write it as "Data DVD".
Aplix WinCDR
BHA B's Recorder GOLD
Padus Disc Juggler
Veritas Record Now
Roxio Easy CD Creator

The DVD-Video format is ISO/UDF Bridge.
For Ahead Nero, please burn it as DVD-ROM (ISO/UDF) and "Force DVD-Video compatibility mode".
For detailed information, please look at the information regarding "Burning a DVD folder" in the help section for each of the products.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q6. When trying to read a VRO file recorded on a DVD recorder, it cannot read the file correctly.
A. TMPGEnc DVD Author supports VRO files recorded on a DVD recorder. However, TMPGEnc DVD author cannot read VRO files where the resolution changes underway, such as with advanced VBR, because this format does not conform to the DVD-Video standard. Moreover, VRO files created in resolutions other than 720*480, 704*480, 352*480, and 352*240 also does not conform to DVD-Video standard, and cannot be read. The audio format needs to be similarly unified into LinearPCM, MPEG-1 Audio Layer2, or Dolby Digital AC-3.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q7. Can you edit copy-protected DVD-Video?
A. Editing is restricted to DVD-Video based on the DVD standard to which copy prohibition processing is not applied, such as one's original work.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q8. During playback, the start of the first frame is about 0.5 seconds behind the source video.
A. If the length of the video and the audio in the source file was not equally long, the length is corrected by deleting the first GOP. This is done to avoid sound gap. Alternatively you can record several seconds too much, and then edit it afterwards in Cut edit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q9. Since it is not possible to edit by frame, unwanted parts remain when cut editing.
A. Cut edit is done by the MPEG GOP. According to the MPEG specification, editing can only be performed using an I-frame.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q10. Can you re-encode video and audio in TMPGEnc DVD Author.
A. You cannot re-encode video in TMPGEnc DVD Author. You can re-encode Linear PCM, MPEG-1 Audio Layer2 audio formats but the user has to specify this option.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q11. When trying to play an authored MPEG-1 file in a PlayStation2, there is no picture when I select play from the menu.
A. When MPEG-1 files has been authored in TMPGEnc DVD Author and then played on a Playstation 2 (SCPH-50000 and previous versions) it sometimes happens that the MPEG-1 files cannot be displayed if they follow either a MPEG-2 file or after a menu has been displayed. If the disk consists of only MPEG-1, has no menu and if it only contains one track, it is possible to view the video satisfactorily.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q12. DVD-RW discs made in DVD-VR mode cannot be read.
A. If the DVD-RW has been recorded on a household DVD recorder, sometimes the created disc cannot be read in Windows 2000/XP with default settings. Please refer with the DVD recorder manual or contact the DVD recorder manufacturer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q13. DVD-RAM discs cannot be read.
A. There are some DVD drives that do not support reading DVD-RAM discs when these have been recorded on a household DVD recorder. Please use a DVD drive that supports DVD-RAM. For information on whether or not your drive supports DVD-RAM, please contact the manufacturer of the DVD drive or the shop where you bought it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q14. The DVD-Video cannot be read.
A. Out of standard DVD-Video or DVD-Video authored by other software can sometimes not be read. We hope for your understanding.

It was something of a rhetorical question. Here's what AD's download section has as a description. The plus version has more function, but I still didn't see editing.

TMPGEnc is an excellent MPEG-1 / MPEG-2 encoder by Hiroyuki Hori. The encoder is extremely versatile, and is capable of producing MPEG for just about any need imaginable.

Well if we want to get exact, here's what he website has to say:

TMPGEnc converts *.AVI file to MPEG1, the format which is used in VideoCD. Using variety of option in TMPGEnc, you can compress your video file in high quality.
TMPGEnc enables us adjust bitrate, quantize matrix, GOP structure, Interlace and many other parameter so that you can create most appropriate movie file depends on your purpose.

http://tmpgenc.net/e_main.html

And here's what they have to say at CNet downloads :

Basically, the program converts AVI files into various flavors of MPEG optimized for DVD, VideoCD, and Super VideoCD

Guess from the screen you pointed out it has some type of edit feature, but is sure isn't a comparable editing tool to WinDVD Creator or in the line of DVDReMake and DVDLabPro which was what was put up for comparison as editing tools. I could just as easily say DVD Shrink or many of the transcoding apps are editing tools.

WinDVD Creator is a multi purpose tool that does capture, edit, author and burn. Here is the short on it's edit features:
Edit
It provides advanced editing tools ? scene detection, split cut, audio tracks added. Users can work in Storyboard or Timeline mode to create a movie with fancy transition effects.

Does that sound anything like TMPGenc? I don't see that close of a comparison.

tmpgenc encoder came out about 5 years or so ago and was the first real encoder that i had used.Created my 1st VCD from a dvd with it (took about 30 hours) and found that you can rip audio, convert into other formats make audio books etc with it.Alot has changed i see as now the 3.0 version supports both encoding and dvd authoring where as the early forms of this program didnt and you could only generate VCD and SVCD formats of your program files.

The newer versions have inded gotten better and now you can even do more with them.

Further quality improvement.
Modify user interface
Add function to create a MPEG file from more than 2 AVI files

Those are listed as the future plans for TMPGEnc as listed on the site. So, a good app will be improved even more. But we're straying farther from the original topic of the thread. It's a good encoding app, but it isn't one of the top line editing programs.

WinDVD Creator is a multi function app as well. Who knows, looks like we're playing with semantics and what individual's idea of an app is. I just notice that even here andmerr mentions encoding and authoring as the attributes of TMPGEnc. The download sites and forums list it as an encoder. So, I guess if one wants to be picky they can say it edits, but in reality it is an encoder with some editing ability. As I said before, a lot of transcoder and encoder programs have some editing ability, that doesn't classify them as editing programs.

Anyone have some more editing apps they can propose to replace WinDVD Creator? Sounds like the interest may be in freeware or more trials. I think we've covered TMPGEnc pretty well. ;)

Vegas is another good one, but it and Premiere have a high learning curve and are expensive. If a person knew those well, jobs would be easy to find as these are professional grade apps.
