Ok I've been burning DVDs for a couple of years now, progressing from Memorex to TY (like a lot of people here). Whilst I'm quite happy with TY I've always had concerns in general about the longevity of DVDs, particularly when reading some of the experiences here. I'm not so bothered about movies since I can always return to the original but I have plenty of digital stills that need to be preserved. I've read before that a gold reflective layer offers the highest quality disk and that seems to be echoed by this great paper from the National Institute of Standards and Technology

http://www.itl.nist.gov/div895/carefordisc/CDandDVDCareandHandlin...

The summary concludes "For archiving recordable (R) discs, it is recommended to use discs that have a gold metal reflective layer."

Well I've seen these disks advertised before but (for some reason) I thought you needed a different kind of burner to use them. They all seem to be manufactured by Mitsumi and coded MAM4XG02. I could only find a couple of places that sold them. Here is one:

I just purchased 10 of these for about 19 UK pounds...so they are way more expensive but I wanted to see what they were like. I've only burned one so far and that was fine in an NEC1300. It plays in all the DVD players in my house (2 DVD-RW drives, 1 DVD-ROM, 2 standalones and a portable) and the Nero scan (I'm really not that familiar with these scans) reported 97% disk quality. Has anyone else tried these ?
