Hello all:) I have burnt onto about 250 of Excel dvd-r 8x 4.7gb 120min disks, they have all been great. I have not burnt a coaster yet which wasent my bad. have recently read that cheap media will mabey give 1 a good burn and good quality that lasts a year or so then decays and end up loosing your backups due to ugly media. I pay around australian 18.00-20.00 for a pack of 25 and 30.00 for pack of 50 (this is their permanent sale price)of these Excel disks from a computer and internet store here in Aus and I was wondering if this media is classed in that ugly and "not to touch" section of the rules of media buying. I have still got my very first burns which were over a year ago now and they are still great, but just looking for some reasureance and advice regarding this media.
Thanks Heaps Guys..
Macey.

I'm not from australlia so I don't know but if you pm someone like andmerr or gwendolin they'll help you. Maybe you won't have to and they'll just read this.

Hi mate,

I am from down under and let me give you some advice. This I have learned the hard way so if I can give you my experience hopefully you wont have to go through it all.
Firstly, do not trust unknown or poor quality media. Althought I dont know the brand you use, from the price I can tell you that it is not good media. Use Nero tool to get the media code from one of your discs and have a look at the complete list of media codes that are available on these forums as a start. You can use a program called DVD identifier as well.
Secondly, only good quality media will give you years of service where cheap inferior media will give you errors or just wont read at all.
I burned a few movies on cheap (strathfield) blank DVDs and end it up with duds or movies that kept skipping and stopping all the time.
DO yourself a favour and get quality media and you wont have problems.

It is getting good quality stuff here that is the hard thing.

Good luck

i will have to go w/ behrad here on his suggestion...even i have never heard of Excel dvd blanks, but i'm curious as to what the MID (media ID coding) is on those particular discs...

i can generally tell you the quality of what you have in your hands once i know the MID coding, as i've tried dozens of different kinds over the years~ :) even the "fake" Taiyo Yuden ones too...w/ the TYG02 coding on them...

so, let us know the coding on those discs and we can help you determine whether or not to continue using them/or to use something else...

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups
