hi - i got a dell dimension 3000 running xp sp2. this burner seems to be useless, as it won't burn any dvds using the sonic software the pc came with. it plays all cds and dvds alright though. is there a decent player that can I backup my songs and movies? thanks!

Are you burning ISO files because that is all Sonic will burn, also if you want to make a direct copy you need software such as AnyDVD or DVD43 running in the background as it won't burn copyrighted disks. Just what make and model of burner did you get with your PC, and what other programs are you using to backup?

philips dvd8701 problem
He hid it in the title Arniebear. You do a google and it seems to end up at Dell. So Phlips may have just made this one for Dell. As a dell owner, jacekone can check to see if his drive needs a firmware update.

Sonic and Roxio merged on the Roxio software, so the Creator suite now falls under Sonic as well as a bunch of other apps. I don't know what is on the OEM setup, but Sonic's software will burn more than ISO. In fact, my experience with it, the software handles most tasks well.

As Arniebear asked, are you using AnyDVD or another decryption software to decrypt the DVDs? Also, if you're recording a DVD, most of the time it has to be encoded (shrunk) to fit a DVD5. Without knowing the software apps you're talking about, it's difficult to figure out the problem.

What Sonic apps are you using to record DVDs and what software are you using for decryption? I'm assuming you're talking about factory DVD movies when you say recording DVDs not working.

@brobear

If it is the bundled version that came with the PC it does not do much of anything because you have to upgrade to the full suite in order to get the rest all you get is Sonic Record Now. It only will burn CD's ISO, do disk copies not much else. At least this is what came with my Dell a few months ago.

You should know then. Those OEM versions when on disc make good skeet targets. They're just enough to do minimal tasks. jacekone may not have the right apps to do the program. That's why I ask, one can't just say a brand and know when there are multiple offerings. You might be surprised at the full function apps and they now have a large line of offerings. They have software for DVD encoding and most other needs. http://www.roxio.com/en/products/dvdcopy/index.jhtml Here's the link for the Creator suite. http://www.roxio.com/en/products/emc/features.jhtml

I got an OEM version of both Sonic and Nero and I opted to get the full retail versions.

hey all -sorry for the late reply and thx for answering my plea. arniebrear - i'm basically a newbie in the dvd copy arena, so i don't think i have anything else running in the background or installed for that matter besides the crappy sonic software.
brobear - the version of sonic i got says that i must upgrade in order to copy dvd directly. I tried my sister's wedding video dvd and back up my favorite movie as my kid brother keeps scratching the original and had to buy it the second time. I'm just looking to copy the wedding video and my fav movie (predator). Any software package idea free or otherwise would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch guys!

DVDs and home (or wedding) movies are different. Factory movies are encrypted and take decryption programs in order to be backed up. Older movies can be done with DVD Decrypter, and some new ones. It lost support, so the decryption software is becoming dated. Like antivirus ware, the definitions have to be updated. DVDFab Decrypter is another that is new, I can't attest to how good because I've only used it a few times. AnyDVD is the best and they keep it updated regularly, but it is retail.
DVD Shrink and Rebuilder are free. Rebuilder has a retail version now, Pro (it's out of beta testing). An easy one is CloneDVD2, another is DVDCopy4.
If you need a recording (burner) app to record your output to disc, You may have one in what you have or there's DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn for free. On the retail side there's Nero, Roxio (Sonica), VSO's CopyToDVD and the list goes on.

Here's a formula for you. Go to http://www.slysoft.com and download the AnyDVD trial. All you have to do is have it on when you go to "rip". The red fox icon will be on the toolbar. Then use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD files to the HD. Next, open the files with DVD Shrink. When the burn window opens (when you enter backup), make sure to use the Quality settings and set the selection to burn with Nero if it isn't already. You have the Nero, Decrypter and Shrink are free, and the only thing that will cost you is if you want to buy the AnyDVD after trying the trial. Another "rip" option is using DVDFab Decrypter instead of AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter for the "rip" to the hard drive. There's a bunch of options that work using different software.

If you have the full Nero package, you can use Recode instead of DVD Shrink.
