What exactly is Duel Layered?

I just purchased a DVD burner that is 16x double layered burning, Just a quick explanation on what is double layered burning and how is it used?

most dvds are dual layers a single layer dvd is limited to 4.7 GB a dual layer can hold up to twice that amount which allows all the extras that you find on most dvds. your burner will allow you to copy the dvds without removing any extras in order for this to happen you must use dual layer blank media which are expensive they cost a lot more than regular 4.7 GB discs dual layer discs are known as DVD 9 single layer are DVD 5 the 9 means it can hols 9 GB and the 5 is 4.7 GB hope this info helps

Dual Layer media has two layers, one on top of the other. The top layer is translucent so the laser can burn on the lower layer. After the lower layer is burned, the top layer is burned.

A dual layer DVD has a capacity of about 7.95 GB, and is also known as a DVD-9.
A single layer DVD has a capacity of about 4.36 GB and is known as a DVD-5.

Most commercial movies are bigger than 4.36 GB so compression and removal of some parts is needed to make it fit on a single layer DVD.

This is usually not needed with D/L media.

If you are just getting started I recommend you try a few single layer burns before using the more expensive D/L media.
