Whenever you're messing around with the firmware, then you run a risk of bricking your psp. I've switched my firmware around a dozen times with no trouble. If you follow the steps exactly then you shouldn't have any trouble. The biggest problem I can think of is unplugging your psp during a firmware change. That could really F*** it up.

If you get files from legitimate sources and NOT P2P networks then your chance of bricking are extremely low. If you go running firmware upgrades and downgraders from sources that you are unsure about then you might screw something up.
