Hello, all. First, let me apologize if this has been asked previously, I used 'search' and didn't seem to come up with anything. OK...last week I bought a new HP 740i dvd writer to replace my old Samsung, which would only burn data files to DVD+RW...no movie files, just data, and only to +RW. I've installed the HP writer as the master drive, my Samsung DVD-ROM being the slave. The HP drive will read cd-r's like normal, and will burn a cd-r with no problems whatsever. When I try to use a DVD, nothing happens...regardless of whether it's an original DVD or a blank. Since my old burner acted the same way near the end of it's life, I figured that it must be Windows related. I completely wiped my hard drive and started from scratch. First, Nero told me that I had a problem with the ASPI drivers, so I updated those using forceASPI. After I updated the ASPI, I inserted a blank Memorex DVD+R, and after about 3 minutes, the pc indicated that there was blank media...awesome! The problem is, it's only recognized the disc about 2 times out of the 15 times I've tried, and it has not recognized the original DVD once (The Office UK version). This actually leads me to believe that I'm on the right track, with the ASPI drivers, because it's at least starting to recognize media.

Sorry this is so long winded, guys. I completely wasted my weekend in front of the computer trying everything I can think of. I don't think the drive is messed up, because my old Samsung acted the same way. Thanks in advance for any help that you guys can offer. Here is the info that Nero infotool gives (and a blank DVD is in the writer as I ran this test) :

Did you possibly get a new IDE cable that came with the writer? maybe the old cable is bad. So try replacing it if you havent.

Also make sure that the HP writer(master) is at the end of the IDE Cable and the 1 you have set as slave in the middle.

You're right about master at the end or the cable. Something that should be noted though, some PCs use Computer Select (CS) as the jumper to use for both drives on the Secondary IDE Channel. Then the Master is at the end or the cable and the Slave is on the inner cable connector. Whoever is changing out a drive should check which sytem is being used with the jumpers. I know Dells have used the CS jumpers.

I'll wade through that log, but before I try to help, I'll add to the info base here. Nero has it's own ASPI layer. So it needs no more. In Nero's toolkit you have an ASPI check. You should get a green light for both Nero and System now that you have it installed; normally a yellow bar to indicate ASPI is absent for the system. It would be an idea to check. Installing ASPI to a later version of Windows is usually unnecessary in most cases. The ATAPI interface is more than sufficient. In some rare cases hardware may require it. I'm the owner of a HP 740I and all I had to do was plug it in and let it be recognized and then use it. So, you didn't need ASPI for the drive. Just glimpsing the log, the ATAPI interface seems to be the one in use anyway. Of all the times I've seen ASPI suggested as the possible cure for problems, I've yet to see it be the cure once. Guess there will be the first time, but not for an HP 740I, that is unless HP did something outlandish during a model run, which I doubt.

One thing you might help me with. My firmware is version DC24 and yours is FF24. I saw no updates in firmware for the 740I at the HP site. Do you have a link that I'm not familiar with or did the FF24 firmware come already installed in the drive? They were listing firmware for the older drives. What is the build date of your drive? On the drive or in Drive Info in DVDInfoPro (on right beside Extra info). The DVDInfoPro app is free. Here's the link to a set up/ quick check at HP. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c... Don't know if that will be any help or not, but it takes you to HP support for the drive. By the way, my drive is listed as a 740B in the software analysis as well. Guess that is common.

I noticed the build dates after going through the log, your item is slightly less than a month newer than mine, so should be the same. I'm still wondering about the firmware difference.

OKay, I browsed about and didn't see anything out of the ordinary in the NERO infotool log, except the firmware difference. The PC is still using the ATAPI interface, if I read that correctly. No system ASPI on my PC and I've to date had no problems ASPI would solve. So, I would put ASPI on the back burner. I'd suggest running over the little quick check on the HP site and then checking the drive in Device Manager and try the Troubleshooting tool in the Properties window. I'd also contact HP about that firmware series because I see the DC24 listed everywhere, but no FF24. That looks strangely out of place.

It's strange, when I "google" for HP 740i firmware, I come up with the DC24, except those that loop back to this conversation. I can't find firmware upgrades for this model at the HP site, and they have firmware for a lot of models. I'm just wondering what's happening with the firmware versions. drosoph, what is the date on your drive?

OK I have a problem and I think it is my firmware as well. First I have the HP 740i and the firmware version is ED24 which came with the computer (which had the drive in it when i purchased it about 3 months ago)
I have burned several movies from my hard drive to DVD with no problem. Recently I bought 2 spindles of Phillips DVD+R and Phillips DVD-R and some Memorex DVD+R (all 100 spindles and all 16X) Previous to that I had used the same Memorex and but in a 50 pack and no problems. Also I have used Sony DVD+R 8X and Fuji DVD-R 8X and no burn troubles.
Movies encode fine on these new DVD's but always get burn process failed. I am using Nero 7.0.1.4 which is the most recent version I believe ( also I tried using Sonic and same problem) I had Nero version 6 and that is when problem started so I upgraded to the version 7. I have also tried burning at 4X and still burn process failed even thogh it says I can burn at 16X (I have also heard that it is reccommended to burn movies at a slower rate)
I have been to the HP site and doesnt give me any firmware update or what the current firmware even is ??? I have done google searches for the DC24 firmware you have and cant find it anywhere. If you have any suggestions as what to do or try I am all ears because I am at my wits end and have 300 DVD's I cant use. Thanks in advance

The firmware is suspect as it encompasses the drives ability to determine a write scheme for media and sometimes needs to be upgraded for newer media. I've been to the HP site and there are no firmware downloads for the 740i to date. Though there has been reference to a few different firmware versions, it seems the DC24 is the most common.

So far I haven't used 16x. Most of the media I've been using is 8X +R Taiyo Yuden sold by various brands. Since 16X isn't common in the stores, I've not gone out of my way to get the usually pricier 16X. If I wanted to burn fast, I could use my Plextor drive to burn the TY media at 12X. It sounds as though you may be right on the firmware. The only other possibility I can think of would be some bad media, though strange getting it in various branded lots. Since you can successfully burn with 8X media, I lean heavily toward your thoughts of firmware. Let us know what's happening and what you find, it won't be long till the 16X will be more common.

Nero tools, DVDInfoPro and DVD Identifier list the manufacturers of media. Using one of those or another utility, who are the manufacturers of your media? One of the faults I find with the HP 740i is that it doesn't fully support Nero's CD DVD Speed or DVDInfoPro's complete battery of media tests. With the HP, about all you can do is run a read scan. I've used hundreds of the Sony in the HP without a bad burn. So, I've had a good track record with the Sony 8X +R (TY and Sony generic) and the HP 740i. If there are no problems with those in your drive, then that would indicate, as I mentioned previously, it is possibly firmware relating to the 16X media.

As to burn speeds, most of the time, when a person is having problems, it is suggested they slow the drive down to 4X till solutions for burn problems have been found. Personally I burn at 4X and 6X without problems and have no doubt I could achieve successful burns at higher speeds. I'm just in no hurry and the slower burns are mostly a comfort factor. However, the possibility of write errors do increase with speed. This doesn't seem to be your problem, but slowing down till the problem is solved won't hurt. Going below 4X with the newer drives and media is a waste of time. If you needed to, it would indicate some media you shouldn't be using in the first place.

Since there doesn't seem to be a lot of info floating around the web about the HP 740i, I'd suggest checking with HP support for the drive. Let us know how it turns out.

So to update my status I returned the 2 16X spindles and got my money back went to a different store where the Fuji's (8X) I have had work in the past were on sale. Well I needed +R's and -R's but they were out of -R's and were giving 16X -R's to replace the 8X's that were out of stock (ALso Fuji's). I hesitated but decided to take them. Also I talked to the sales guy, told him my situation and he convinced me to buy the same burner I already have and try that one and if it works with the 16X DVD's and the old one still doesnt work with the new Fuji 16X then to put the old one in the box and return it as the one I just bought. Pretty bold statement from the sales guy lol.

So I got home installed it and successfully copied a DVD from the new one to the old one at max speed (which should of been 16X but said was 4X but it worked so I dont care) And now I have successfully burned a movie from my hard drive on the old drive with the new Nero and a new Fuji 16X. What I am starting to believe the problem is now was Nero. I dl'd a copy of version 6 then my g/f dl'd version 7 for some unknown reason. Well the new drive I bought came with Nero version 6 and the old one which came with the system I bought was Sonic. So crossing my fingers that Nero was the problem and I have solved things. All I know is I will do my best to stay away from 16X DVD's if I can !!!!! Also the firmware is the same as the firmware I already had so I am guessing it wasnt a firmware problem. Maybe it was a problem with the media type (Phillips) I will keep you posted. Also I tried a DVD that I had that I thought were bad from Memorex (who are sending me a neww 100) and they are working burning at 4X and 8X. I tried 16X out of curiousity and it failed.
Also the firmware I got with the new drive was the same one I had (ED24) so I am guessing that is the proper firmware. Thanks for the help all. Now that I discovered this helpful forum I will visit more often to see if I can help or find answers to any problems that pop up.

Unless it was just a bad installation, I wouldn't suspect Nero. I have the 740i and it worked with Nero 6 and I'm now using 7. I wouldn't rule it out completely because you mentioned Sonic. Sometimes drivers are left behind that cause interference. I can't see it affecting one Nero and not the other though. They're very similar.

I have a similar problem with HP740E.

The other day I tried to copy a DVD of a home movie (burned on to a standard DVD)to a light scribe DVD. Nero does not read the light scribe DVD for some reason. When I copied the same DVD to a standard, blank DVD there was no problem.

However, when I want to burn a project to a light scribe DVD using Pinnacle Studio 9, there is no problem. It's only when I try to use Nero.

Hmm... Don't use Nero or ask Nero support what's up. Which version of Nero are you using? I've not seen the lightscribe disc problems, but I don't use many lightscribe discs, though my burner will handle them. Except for the occasional buggy update, Nero has been relatively trouble free with my HP and Plex burners.
