You bought the wrong media.

The drive reads and writes +R DL, NOT -R DL.

Just go shopping for a DL burner. Many of the new ones handle both + and -R DL. I have an HP and a Plextor that does. You should be able to find one at Wal Marts or one of the other discount stores pretty cheap if that is your only criteria. I'd think it would be cheaper to buy the media that works in the drive you have, that is unless you bought a big bundle and can't return it. That DL is pricey.

well i got 25 for $50, and my main reason to buy one that does is because i read that DVD-Rs are good for videos. unless otherwise i'd stick to this one i got and just buy the media for it...

thanks for help by the way

Some of the Sony drives booktype +R DL to DVD ROM. That's more compatible than -R as DVD ROM is the universal standard for DVD players. It would be worth checking. DVDInfoPro and Nero will set booktyping if the drive supports it.

Whose saying -R DL is more compatible? It sometimes depends on certain players like the DVD recorders that only play one format. Most new hardware handles both formats.

By the way, you're in luck, the drive does booktype.
The DRU-720A also supports a feature called "bitsetting." While the drive automatically sets the book type of DVD+R DL media to "DVD-ROM", you can manually do the same with single layer DVD+R and DVD+RW media using Nero, CD Speed or Lite-On's BookType Utility. This feature comes in handy if you have an older DVD player that has problems playing recordable media.
So this drive automatically sets your +R DL to DVD ROM, you couldn't ask for more. I'd set the +R to booktype to DVD ROM as well since it can do it.

Here's the link to a review on your drive. You may want to check the firmware on your drive to make sure it is up to date. The link for the review:
