Dual layer= one side burn
Dual sides= both sides can be burned

Your burner has to support it to use DL.
What are you trying to use the pricey DL to do?

First off I dont even think you can get double sidded Blank Media. I could be wrong but if never seen it.

As of the most commen DVD Blank media out there...

Single Layer = 4.7GB Burns 1 layer on 1 side.

Double Layer = 8.5GB Burns 2 layers on 1 side.

Hardeware -- What you will need to have is a DVD/DL compatible burrner. So you need to find out if your DVD burrner will burn the DL disc.

Aplications -- Your burrning App will have to be compatible with DL burrning as well. Most burrning applications you get now days are compatible to do it.

You can buy DL blank media and fit up to 8.5GB on 1 side. (it burns 2 layers on the same side)

I looked up the NIC-6500A and if that is the drive you have then yes you can use DVD-DL media.

From the website linked below.
Quote:
capable to write at 8x speed DVD-R and DVD+R media as well as 4x write or rewrite DVD-RW and DVD+RW media and up to 8.5GB on the new double layer DVD +R9 media

DVD-R-DVDR-4x-blank-media-94-bulk.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.meritline.com/ritek-DVD-R-DVDR-4x-blank-media-94-bulk.html
I like to use it for like the HBO multi disk series.
But they are not double sided, dual layer.
