I have been using dvd shrink for a while and now all of the sudden after i hit the backup button it just saves the movie to my hard-drive and says its complete before it used to tell me checking discs while i switched the disc to a blank one. Can somebody please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Check to see if you have inavertanly changed some of the optional settings in DVD Shrink.

Looks like some settings in shrink may of been changed.
You don't state wheather you burn with nero or decrypter, so I'll try and explain both ways.

Autoburning with decrypter:
First dvd decrypter must be installed on you system for this to work.

If creating an ISO image:
After DVDshrink has finished analysing the DVD, click on the backup tab, from the dropdown menu choose to save target as "ISO Image file and burn with decrypter", decrypter will automatically launch and ask for media.

OR

Autoburning with nero:
In shrink goto: edit-->preferences, click on the File I/O tab and check enable burning with nero.

After DVDshrink has finished analysing the DVD, click on the backup tab, from the dropdown menu choose to save target as "ISO Image file". Nero will automatically launch when it's needed to burn the image.

OR

In shrink goto: edit-->preferences, click on the File I/O tab and check enable burning with nero.

After DVDshrink has finished analysing the DVD, click on the backup tab, from the dropdown menu choose to save target as "File folder". Nero will automatically launch when it's needed to burn the files to disk.

What did you use to burn with before, were you burning an image(.iso file) or files in a VIDEO_TS folder (.VOB, .ifo, .bup files), and exactly what was the process/steps you took to do so?

i downloaded the DVD Shrink put in a movie and hit backup and then it said encoding and then after that it ejected the dvd and said checking discs i would then put in a blank dvd and it would burn and thats all i ever had to do

Ok, so you have shrink. If you don't have Nero, dont worry about it.

Get dvd decrypter and install it. Get it here:

Insert the DVD you're backing up (wait a few seconds for the disk to be recognized), then run shrink.

Choose open disk, click ok

Shrink will analyze the disk

When done click on the re-author tab at the top and re-author the movie. Here is a guide on how to do it:

When done press the backup tab and follow the instructions above I gave for creating an "ISO image and burning with decrypter".
