Hi Gear79,

My burner is Mashita UJ-840D and I'm using Nero 7. I'm not to sure what you mean by PC Specs. The media is TDK

Make sure your DVD/RW is in DMA mode. It could have fallen in PIO mode. Most times this is the reason for slow burrning and reading.

In WIndows XP which i hope you have...

Click Start/Control Panel/Choose SYSTEM in the list (If you dont see System in the list you will have to switch to clasic view which is on the left hand side of the window)

Once you do that a window will come up. Choose the HARDWARE Tab then click on DEVICE MANAGER.

Now go to your IDE CONTROLLERS and double click it to branch it out.

Now find the IDE controller that your DVD/RW is on and make sure it is in DMA mode. If it is in PIO mode change it then clcik apply and exit out.

If it wont let you change it or wont stay in DMA mode go back to the IDE contoller and delete it then restart your computer and windows should re-install it into DMA mode.

@ ohmss.... scrap the TDK, as that can pose a problem from the get go.
try something better like verbatim, sony, fuji, ty, or maxell. (just use the ones that are made in japan, except for the verbatim) they are taiwan made, but good stuff.
i cant find your drive anywhere... i'll keep looking.

your pc specs are how much ram it has, memory, processor speed, hard drive space....

I agree with getting better media but I dont see where cheap media would make a diffrence in how long it takes to burn a DVD.

If it is taking more then an hour or two to burn the DVD then more then likly it is a hardware or software problem. As I said above most of the time this occures when your drive falls in PIO mode. So check and make sure it is in DMA mode if not do the steps in the above post to try to fix the problem.

Sorry All, I was coming back with a result, although its not to my liking. I had so much junk installed on my Laptop and because it was running so slow I decided to restore it to its factory state. With that done Nero is still taking 2 - 3 hours to burn a DVD and my DMA is fine. What I did notice was, when I open Nero I select "Make your own DVD Video" and either import the disc or files, this is the setting that takes forever to burn. I tryed something different earlier and selected "Copy DVD" setting and it did it with Nero express which was done in about 15 mins, I was shocked. The problem was it copied to DVD but wouldn't play in a regular player, it did in the Laptop though.

When you choose to make your own DVD you are using Nero Vision Express.

This is the reason it is taking so long make the DVD.

If the downloaded movie is an AVI file(Xvid, DivX) then it will take longer to complete the DVD. The reason being is Nero vision Express is converting the AVI into DVD format. Which can take up to 1 to 2 hours to do.

Now when you selected "Copy DVD" then Nero is burning the AVI file without converting it to DVD format which will only tack a few minutes to do cause it is not converting the AVI to DVD format. Resulting in not being able to play on your standalone player if it isnt AVI(DivX, Xvid) comaptible.

Some Standalone players can play AVI type files but most wont.

So it isnt uncommen for it to take that long to (Convert & Burn) an AVI file which seems to be what you are doing. So if your Standlaone DVD Player dosent support AVI files then you will have to do what you have been doing and convert it to DVD which can take a while to do.

Cheers larrylje, I guess I'll have to except the long wait. I'm probably going to give up on downloading those free movies anyway. It slows up the Laptop, sometimes get the wrong movie and if your lucky to get the correct movie its never in surround sound which makes a hell of a difference watching, specially when you have a Home Theatre System

What are you using to download?

If you get a torrent client (uTorrent, Azureus, BitTorrent etc etc) and then go to torrent sites you can get the full DVD with menus and all. Of course they are close to 4GB to download so you would have to have a good internet connection.

even at 4 gigs to download, that would take a few hours...

even 700 megs on mine, and i can peak at 6megs d/l speeds, it would take over 3 hours sometimes....

but i dont donwload no more... too much policing on the net and not worth the risk to me anymore !!
