AnyDVD should always be running, IMO. With that said, have you tried CloneDVD? A couple of newer movies that didn't work with Shrink, I've tried with Clone and they came out fine. If that doesn't work, and if I'm not mistaken, I think VOBblanker is another good one.
Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

try this it worked for me if it doesnt work for you pm me. DVDfab, the latest version, then when you get the files onto your hard drive, use dvshrink then to make the iso for burning, any questions pm me , I have over 800 dvds backed up. I myself and my family are huge movie buffs and if we didnt back them up I woulda bought as many copies of some movies as I have of some cd's back in the day. Boo, to the ppl trying to stop me from backing up MY own media. Shame on you.

With AnyDVD runing in the background, drag the video file to the desktop (or elsewhere on the HD) and then process with Shrink/etc.

@siggy21 Is your AnyDVD up to date? 5.8.3.1? I had no trouble with AnyDVD and Shrink with burn thru Nero. AnyDVD and Recode would NOT work.
