What media are you using? Also did you recently switch media? Freezing and skipping are usually the cause of low grade media.

I was using tdk but got a supply of philips and memorex for X-mas - I use shrink to compress and Nero to burn - movie usually seems fine until about halfway through

glend1,
The information beltline gave you was correct and the blank media you are using is really low grade. Try Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell or Fuji- Made in Japan. Withe the blank media you are using it will be hit or miss.

I suggest to anyone who burns-Stay away from:
Memosux
TDK
Phillips
HP
Khypermedia
And all store brand name media except for the Office Depot 8x and 16x media.

There's some pretty crappy manufacturers in those.

Here's what the crappy media can do to a burner:
1) Burn errors, throwing your DMA's into pio mode.
2) Burn errors-failing at the end of backup-uneven dye
3) May not burn at rated speed
4) Has to be burn slower

Here's where majority of problems occur on playback:

1) Pixellates
2) Freezes
3) No disc inserted error
4) Skipping

Some stand alone players will pick out these quality differences. This is where I have witnessed problems with the lower quality media.

You may have gotten a hold of some of their better manufacturers, but then your last batch may be the crappy manufacturers.

Where do those freezing issues occur when you view them?
Stand alone player or Pc burner drive?

Your drive should be able to play it's own backup and they should look near original. Verify that backup using your pc drive, and view the area of the disc that the freezing occurs.

Also verify them on other stand alones/pc drives and see how they react to them. That should tell you if it is a stand alone player issue or a disc issue.

Looks like I'm headed out to get better disk and will also check into the issue to determine if it is a stand alone player issue - I usually watch on dvd player and that's were I notice the problems. Thanks all for their time especially to Saugmon - you gave a lot to look at - G

glend1 - if you look at the DVD MEDIA forum, you will see the sales of the week. Here are some you could look for: (assuming you live in the US)

Best Buy
Verbatim: 50 pack dvd+r/dvd-r for $14.99
Fujifilm: 25 pack dvd+r/dvd-r for $7.99 (Made in Japan Only)

Circuit City
Sony: 50 pack $14.99 (You want the made in Japan, but I hear the Sony made in Taiwan is also good).

Always check your media when you first open it to see what the true media code is. You can use dvdidentifier (free):

My recommendation of high quality media are: genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim "advanced azo or datalife plus", Maxell (mij by Hitachi) or Ritek. I've used them over hundreds and hundreds (thousand) and I've never experienced any freezing whatsoever.

However, the choice is yours!

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

I am also having problems with movies freezing. Everything worked fine for the first couple of months, then it started in. Is not a disk quality problem. I have tried a dozen different types of disks and the problem continues. Latest disk i am using are Taiyo Yuden Silver and they exhibit the exact same problem as Memorex, HP, Sony, TDK. Maxell etc. I do not recall loading any new program that at the time the problem started occuring, but that may have happened. The disk will hang up with original copy out of DVD Shrink, and the same problem will occur if I try to replicate the disk with Nero. I have DeFragged etc and that also made no difference. Any help appreciated.

colrip7,
Do you have INCD installed on the computer because that program w/in Nero will cause that problem
Is your firmware up to date. Post the last Nero burn log so we can read the errors there

I finally gave up and bought a new DVD burner. It appears to have taken care of the problem. When I get a chance, I will burn a dvd using the old burner and will let you know what happens (and I will samve the Nero log). For now, it appears I am back in business.
I have one complaint though. I have read many, many threads on here about burned DVD's freezing on playback and every one jumps on the guy for the disk's he is using. Most of the "freeze" problems sounded the same or similar to mine. My problem was not a disk problem, but apprently a burner problem.

Thanks,

Steve

colrip7 ,
If you had posted the Nero Log it probably would have given us a better indication of the burning problem in the errors. The vast majority of the burning errors are caused by Cheap Media and in 95% of the time that cures the problem. You went from 1 post to replacing the burner w/ no info in between. Glad you figured out what was wrong but the cheap media does cause problems. Most of the Senior Members and above have already learned that lesson and all we are doing is passing on that knowledge

@colrip7,
That is interesting to know that changing your burner corrected the problem. It would be helpful if you could tell us what the make and model of the original burner is.

I would also recommend using 4X as a burn speed or at least no faster than half the rated speed of the media.

I too have gotten Memorex media as a gift from well meaning friends and family. I used it and it worked OK as long as I burned slowly and reduced the target size.

Cheers,
Frank

I apologise if you took offense at my comments. My system worked flawlessly for about 4 or 5 months, then all of a sudden I started having a problem with DVD's freezing on playback. This occurred on every DVD I made from that point on. It did not seem likely to me that all of a sudden all my unused disks went bad. Every so often I would check this forum and I found several instances of others with the same problem. Usually the individual was hammered on about the disks he was using, but I never saw one instance of that curing the problem. Again, the problem being the DVD freezing on play back, usually with a few minutes left in the movie. Sometimes you can fast forward/rewind and make it thru, but not always. I tried many many different kinds of disks, I reloaded all the software, etc. I did not come to this forum with my problem because I knew the answer from many was to try different disks and I was quite sure that was not the problem.
I finally decided to get some help on here, but after I left my message this morning, I went to Costco. I happen to see an external DVD writer and decided what the heck, I will try that. I came home, plugged it in and burned a few disks and it worked. I even burned some copies of disks that were still on my hard drive that I had previously had the freeze problem with (using my old burner). They work fine now.

Anyhow, I will try the old burner again and will post the log. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Steve,
I'm sure no one here took offense at anything you posted. I'm pretty sure your burner is bad and a new one will fix the problem. We always recommend using good media as it actually does work better than others. We do know of many examples of this.
I am curious more than anything else about the make and model of your burner though.

I recommend you put an internal burner in. USB does work but seems to have more problems. That's your decision though and it is working for you which is great.

Nero saves logs regardless if you tell it to or not.

For Nero 6:
C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

For Nero 7:
C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log

This will be every Nero burn log for every burn you have done. Just send the last one.
Each individual log is seperated by this:
====== *** Nero Burning ROM, History File *** ======

If you do post one, make sure to edit out your Nero serial number. It usually looks like this:
1a23 xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx
