Swap Magic 3.6 can't seem to load my games

Hey, I'm new to this and I've recently got a fliptop case and Swap Magic 3.6 for my PS2. The model number is SCPH-30001, I'm not sure which version it is. So I installed everything and I can load the SM 3.6 DVD fine, but after I swap the discs and press X, it loads forever and the game never starts. I've waited over 15 minutes and I don't think it takes that long. I'm trying to load Dragonquest 8 on a CompUSA DVD+R burned with Nero 6. I'm aware that I should get better media for the disc but the problem is, this DVD+R loads fine on my friend's PS2. He has the same model as mine, SCPH-30001, and uses SM 3.6. I brought my PS2 over to his house the other day and tried all my games, it worked on his but not mine. I haven't got a single game to work on mine and I have no clue whats wrong with it. I also tested both of our SM 3.6 discs, and they work fine. So the problem seems to be my PS2 and not any of the discs. I read somewhere about turning the white dial inside the PS2 near the lens, I've tried that too and it doesn't work. Anything else I can try that might solve this problem? Thanks!

get better discs and use -r. Even if 2 ps2's have the same model number, they can have totally different lasers in them.

That's a v.4 PS2. v.4's are 50/50 as far as reading DVD+R's. Use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim DVD-R's. I back all my games up on Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. You can find good deals on TY and Verb's at http://www.supermediastore.com

I think I have the same model PS2 and I am having the same problems using Sony 8x dvd-r's and tdk 8x dvd+r's. The SM3.6 boots but I get a "not a valid PS2 disk" error with every attempt. I have the fliptop case. I've been checking every guide I can get my hands on to try and discover what I'm doing wrong but am still making coasters. I tried to set booktype with dvd decryptor but it failed when I clicked "change". My burner is a NEC3520a, I think I have the latest firmware but am going to update it anyway tonight. Setting Nero 7 to automatic to get the bitsetting isn't working either. Just tried Clonecd and that failed too. Is the media you specified that much better? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I haven't tried adjusting the laser yet. I am trying to back up NHL2k5 as a test.

You you probably just don't have the firmware up to date. I'm pretty sure the NEC 3520 supports booktype/bitsetting.
From Papa Meth at videohelp.com:
I also have an NEC3520a and it burns fairly well. The Pioneer gets me better quality scans on -R media when it works correctly. The NEC works better on +R with DVD-ROM booktype. the 3520a has several reports of issues with CD-R media though. I haven't run into it myself.
Try updating your firmware.
92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. This may also help me/others:
I got a response from the place I got the swap magic disks (I had a problem with the CD version not booting) and in the automatic reply they mentioned that you should use the white disk insert that comes with your ps2, not the one that comes in the SM fliptop. Apparently the original has a piece of metal or magnet in it that grips the disk more securely and stops the noise that some have been complaining about during start up. I saw that the fliptop had one in it already so I didn't switch them.
Maybe I have 8 copies of NHL at home and don't know it.
At least I have some more things to try - let you know the results.

updated firmware from 3.04 to 3.06 through nec still couldn't get dvd-rom to be set through dvd decryptor. Tried Winbtype and dvd bitsetter to override the firmware and neither worked. Found Binflash from liggydee at cdfeaks and that worked to get the dvd-rom enabled on my nec 3520a. Swapped out the center hub from the original ps2 case to the flip top (big difference; fliptop comes with a lockwasher original was a solid piece of metal/magnet) and after all that- burned a coaster with dvd decryptor and Nero 7. Can't understand it, frustrated, everyone else seems to be getting over minor humps and making it work. I had a mod chip with ps1 does anyone think a soldered chip would react differently? Guess I'll try my stuff on a friends system and the laser calibration trick.

16x DVD+R Media, 120 Minute / 4.7 GB, Spindle, 25 Pack with Advanced AZO recording dye optimizes read/write performance
They appear to be the same that are on the supermedia site and I can try them tonight.
Do you think it is worth waiting and order the Taiyo Yuden's?
Can DVD-R be used in booktype DVD-ROM?

That's a v.4 PS2. Go with high quality DVD-R's. I have a v.4 PS2, DVD+R's are a 50/50 propistion in a v.4. I use Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R's for my PS2 games. I've never had a boot failure or coaster with TY's. Verbatim DVD-R's are excellent as well. Sam's Club carries 50 packs of Verb's for $15. Those should work fine.

Don't underestimate all the calls for good media, taiyo is the best and solved all my problems. Start there with any problems with burning.
