I have been "backing up" movies for about 2.5 years with no problems. Now the last 8 or so movies I have backed up the playback is all blocky, jerks around and skips parts altogether. I was using only dvd shrink 3.2, but added DVD decrypter and DVD fab to my process to back up movies that DVD shrink gave me encryption faults on. Now I use DVDfab, then DVDshrink 3.2 (if needed) then Nero burning rom 6. I tried to backup 3 workout DVD's using DVDfab and then Nero (they were only about 2.6G). The playback is terrible. Any ideas what could suddenly be happening to make all my backups go awry? I have not been doing anything different.

Thanks.

Did you change the Media your using?

If not get a Media ID identifier like (VSO Inspector) and check to see if the Manufactures ID has changed on the media your using. They could be manufatured from somewhere else since the last time you used them.

You may also need a try a lens cleaner for your drive and player.
Also make sure your firmware is up to date on your drive.
As larrylje said the manufacturer may have changed so a firmware can help. Make sure your using quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

Thanks for the replies, I will try a lens cleaner. I have a 100 spindle of DVD's, so the media is still the same. I will try and update the firmware on the drive and see if that helps. I did do an update about a year or more ago so that I could uses DVD-R media. It would only recognize DVD+R when I first bought this POS HP computer.

Post back on how it works out. What brand of media are you using? I'm wondering if they may be going bad on you since you've had them awhile.

Wow. I don't know what the hell is going on now. I got a cleaning disc and it worked fine in my DVD player hooked up to my TV. Inserted it into my HP Pavilion and got an I/O error every time I tried to open the folder on the DVD drive with the cleaner disc inserted. Switched from TDK to Memorex dvd-r's and now for some reason Nero 6 will only let me burn a .nrg. What in the hell is going on, has my DVD burner shit the bed? When I select "multiple recording devices" in Nero, I can select either a virtual image (which writes a 4.7G file to the HD) or my HP dvd writer 200j. When I select the DVD writer I get an invalid media error. My firmaware is also up to date with HP's latest release.

Hate to tell you but I think that you went from bad to worse in your media selection. Try some Verbs, TYs or Maxells ....

Well we now know the cause of playback issue - the media used. As bilbo pointed out - bad to worse. Your invalid media issue could be from those memorex. No firmware upgrade can help poor media.
Pick up some of the ones bilbo65 mentioned. Those tdk's you were using have probably started to degrade and the memorex tyr and get you $ back.
Here's a good site to buy Taiyo Yuden (great stuff) and Verbatim if in the US:

I really don't have much to add. TDK and memorex are 2 of the worst media brands there are. Some other good choices besides verbatim, taiyo yuden, and maxell are sony and fuji made in japan.
