That drive is a re-badged litey so you can booktype using the Lite-on utility. I'm not sure if this link works, but that utility will do the booktyping for your sony 710A
http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm
If it doesn't work, just google for Lite-on's main website and look for that utility. Mort81 knows all about that utility, maybe he'll even join in?

saugmon is indeed correct. Your Sony burner is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1633S.

just use Nero or dvdinfopro to enable booktyping...i've had that drive for years...but, i burn w/ Nero most of the time, it works a charm... :)
i believe alkohol has a lil "guide" to doing it...he has the same drive as well~ :)
using the liteon utility will work too, but some people (myself included), it does not work for the Sony dru-710a...i think alkohol has the same problem too...so, we both opt to use Nero to do it

For some reason,Nero won't booktype on all drives that have that capability. I've got 2 benq 1620s that Nero did booktype them. However,it wouldn't booktype my benq 1640.
It's always worth a shot checking that box in DVD Shrink to enable booktyping. It may or may not work.If not, that utility will or a program like dvdinfopro may work.

When a media is read in a player, the first thing that is read is what type of media it is ! Booktyping is making sure that what is read by the player is DVD-ROM . In other words,Booktyping tricks the player into detecting/identifying the disk as a DVD-ROM which all players are compatiable with.

Booktyping is also called bit-setting. Your basic dvd formats are dvd-rom which is the pressed in original dvd format/dvd+r/and DVD-R. When it comes to dvd backups, compatability can be screwy on those drives that will play our backups.
Booktyping is the ability to alter the plus format media and turn them into the dvd-rom format. By booktyping, you are fooling those stand alones into thinking they are dvd-roms.Not all dvd burners have this ability.Benq/Plextor/Lite-on/LG/Ricoh and the rebadged drives made by those manufacturers have that ability.Other drives may need a special hacked firmware for this feature.Only the plus format can be booktyped. +r/+rw/+rDL. It all depends on your model#.
Booktyping comes in handy if you play your backups in a lot of different pc drives/game consoles/and stand alone players. Some of these can be picky as to which format they will recognize. If you encounter a stand alone player that gives a no disc inserted error, booktyping will help. It actually give you 3 different formats to find what your player/s will accept.I booktype all mine in all 3 of my benqs and they will play virtually anywhere I want. Not so fortunant on 3 other pc burners without that capability.
If you only play your backups in a couple of drives, and have no trouble with them, then booktyping is not a priority. It's always nice having that third option for stand alone compatability.

I see, but will this correct my issue with my Sony DVD RW DRU-710A not being able to read some DVD. I am sure I am using the same region codes. However, I am not able to have the DVD drive read some newer produced DVD. It doesn't read at all, except show the discs maximum capacity.

For thos of you who dont know how to do what i wanted here are the directions:They work perfectly.
Download the 710A firmware from the following site. Load the EXE firmware into OmniPatcher and apply the fix bitsetting and auto-bitsetting patches. Save the firmware and then run the saved firmware to flash the drive.

My DRU710A will "automatically" book type any DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL into DVD-ROM format whenever I used Nero Burning Rom Nero Express, Nero Vision or Nero Recode 2 to burn. In addition, it also worked using the "Lite-On" tab to set the book type to "DVD-ROM" whenever I used DVD Decrypter to burn.
