ok I have the 3.2 DVD shrink and the nero that came with the hp7401 dvd burner I just want to make a whole copy of a disk. I put the the movie in my master drive which is just a dvd player and a blank dvd-r into my burner I start dvd shrink and the hit the back up button. it goes thru the encoding which takes 30-40 mins then it automatically starts to burn on its own but gets like 20% more or less some times then locks up I wait longer still nothing. it has burned a little you can see it when you look at the blank dvd. what am i doing wrong. yes this is my first try at burning dvds so any help would be nice.

I assume you are using Nero to burn with, could you post a log of the failed burn?

there is no log it just says its at 28% but will not go up any further and I waited like an hour. so then I hit the cancel button but I have to do the control-alt-delete then close it out that way. but then I have to restart my pc because the burner drive won't open now

So what program are you using to burn with? There is no error message, the burn just freezes?

Make sure your firmware is current and also what kind of blanks are you using?

The firmware for your burner: Go here to check if your firmware version is current: http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

Maxell's are good if made in Japan, steer clear of most things made in Taiwan.

You can find your current firmware version in Nero CD speed.

Edit: Sorry 'bout the pirate thingy...that was for another poster. LOL

Yep, you want them set differently...as far as the technical side of the innerworkings of a PC, I'm not the best, but I've heard the two drives need to be on separate IDE channels.

Have you tried burning with DVD Decrypter?

"OEM" versions of Nero are problematic.

Nero saves a log whether you do or not.

Locations:

Nero 6:
C:\Program files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

Nero 7:
C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log

Send the last log.

Each log is seperated by one of these:

===== *** Nero Burning ROM, History File *** ======

You probably don't have a serial number if this is OEM Nero so you don't have to worry about not posting it.

ok I have tried everything to get both of my drives to have the dma on but still no good the only way I can get my dma on for my burner is make it the master drive that makes my plain burner be the slave. so now the encoding is taking over an hour. I can live with this if it will burn a movie i have to wait for the encoding to finish up to see how far the burning process will go. Thanks for your help I know I been a pain in your butt so I justed wanted you to know that i am grateful

yeah i got the Nero with my dvd writer. now the DVD Decrypter just saved it my hard drive I tried to save that to a disk but it only got to 27% burn and just sat there at 27% for over an hour.

No problem, but I'd still like to get you burning again, with everything the way it should be.

I'm just glad fasfrank has stopped by, as I'm almost to the end of my rope.

Since you've tried burning with DVD Decrypter, we can take a look at that log too.

ok the problem is that the dma is not on for both of my slave and master. because the only one that shows that the dma is on is my master so i have my burner as the slave which means the encoding gets done in under 30 mins but then freezes up when it starts to burn to disk. so i switch to make my burner the master then encoding took well over an hour but at least it burnt the whole disk this time in under ten minutes. but i did try to make both into dma by deleting the drives for them. like the thread that alchol posted.

Your hp should have come with instructions on how to install it and get the jumpers set correctly.

I have the instructions that came with my Pioneer and Sony burners and this is what they show for a typical three drive setup (hdd, burner, DVD-ROM):

Your hard drive should be connected by itself to the end connector of the primary IDE cable with the jumper set to master. You should not have had to unplug or do anything with your hard drive when you installed the burner.

You should have the burner connected to the end connector of the secondary IDE cable and the jumper set to master.

Your DVD-ROM drive should be connected to the middle connector of the secondary IDE cable (The same cable your burner is on) with the jumper set to slave.

The thing to remember here is that the drive connected to the end connector is the master and the drive connected to the middle connector is the slave.

I wouldn't be surprised if you have forced your PC to revert to PIO each time you tried to burn with the jumpers/connectors in the wrong location.

Try setting it again once you get the jumper and connection locations sorted out. If it still does not work then you can try tweaking the registry settings to reset the error count. Be very careful here.

Backup your registry before proceeding.

Run REGEDIT.
Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.
Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.
Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA)

If it still does not work check out this thread at VideoHelp.com:

About Decrypter and Shrink:

You do not need to open Decrypter!

You are not using it to decrypt the DVD. All you are going to use it for is to burn the DVD.

Shrink will open it for you at the correct time but only if you make a simple change in Shrink.

Open your movie in Shrink and proceed as you have been. When you are ready to start the encoding process you select "Backup!", Right?

This opens the "Backup DVD" menu.

Look down there on your "Target Device" menu. Change the target device to "Create ISO Image and burn with DVD Decrypter".
Thats all you need to change.
Shrink will open Decrypter at the correct time and start the burn process. Just make sure you have a blank disc in the burner.

Just so you know, Shrink was doing that with your Nero.
Go here in Shrink:
Edit > Preferences > File I/O tab.

The Enable burning with Nero box is checked by default. You can uncheck it or not. Once you change the target device setting to use Decrypter then that will override this setting.

You should actually go into Decrypter at some point and set the burn speed. Make sure you have a blank disc spun up in your burner first.

Open Decrypter and select Mode > ISO > Write.

Set the burn speed to 4X, lower left.

Close Decrypter. It will remember the speed setting.

Well thats all I can think of.

If you do make changes to your registry, be very careful! Double check you are at the correct location and follow the instructions exactly.
Do a registry backup before you start:

nope didn't blew it up yet but i might lol. anyways I tried all that stuff and still which ever drive i set up as my slave it stays in PIO Mode so what I did was just make my burner be my master then still use my Nero and DVD Shrink to burn but now I have to switch disk after the encoding is done so its only taking about 40 mins to burn a whole dvd so I guess that ain't to bad.

40 minutes is actually not bad at all, unless you've just got a screaming system the average time should be between 40-60 minutes. The important thing is you are burning agian.
