Good morning all. A lot of nice strong coffee to keep me awake during the two to three hours of our weekly and unnecessary staff meeting. It is pouring rain in Philly and I noticed a new fashion statement in raincoats among the college students this morning...the hefty garbage bag raincoat. One just snips a hole in the center of the bottom and slides in over his/her head and voila! ...an instant and disposable raincoat. Not exactly to my taste though. I prefer those yellow things with the cap like ten year olds wear :)

ELP vinyl record player employs lasers instead of a needle!

Posted by Dan Bell on 20 May 2006 - 03:08 - Source: ELP

OK guys, maybe you heard of this thing, but it's news to me. We have many visitors here that for one reason or another, still have some vinyl records around. Yours truly included, I just can't bring myself to getting rid of them. Even though you can get a good turntable, each time you play the record, it must have some negative impact on it. Imagine if you could play them and never touch the surface.

Japanese company ELP, have devised a player that uses lasers to play your old records, which is pretty darn cool. The laser "stylus" reads the record grooves with light, therefore no groove contact and no wear, plus the unit features pure analog playback. Speaking of playback, audiophiles rejoice, as the ELP will play back your vinyl treasures with master tape quality. The only drawback is, it will set you back about $15,000 dollars US. But, to a CD Freak, this is nothing!

How the LT Works

The Principle of Contact-Free Tracking and Audio Reproduction

Two Tracking Laser beams are directed to the left and to the right shoulders of the groove of the record. Only the part of the beams that reach the groove are reflected to two PSD (Position Sensitive Detector) optical semiconductors. The part of the beams that fall on the land area of the record are deflected and not picked up by the PSD devices. The signals are sent to a microprocessor via analog to digital converters, then to servos to maintain the reader head position directly above the groove.

Two additional laser beams are directed at the left groove wall and the right groove wall just below the tracking beams. Modulation on the individual grooves is reflected to scanner mirrors and onto left and right photo optical sensors. The variations of the modulated light cause the audio sensors to develop an electrical representation of the mechanical modulation of the grooves. The entire sound reproduction chain is analog.

The distance from the surface of the record to the traveling pickup head is kept constant by using a separate laser beam. This is very similar to every CD player that uses a "focus" laser to move the laser that reads digital bits to the proper spacing between the reader and the disc. Since phono records vary in thickness, this feature assures precision alignment from the pickup head to the record. The servos are fast and responsive allowing the LT to accommodate even warped records. Also the new audiophile 180 gram (thick) records are reproduced beautifully.

A special calibration LP record is furnished with each Laser Turntable and is used to set up the optics and microprocessor. The record has about 20 minutes of grooves with no sound. It is necessary to run this special disk for about 30 seconds.

The calibration disk should be used when you operate the machine for the first time. Every few months you may elect to run the calibration disk to maintain tracking accuracy, particularly if you notice any mis-tracking during playback. When the machine is moved to another location, it is wise to run the calibration disk again.

The Laser Turntable is, no doubt, the most sophisticated and state-of-the-art "Record player" ever designed.

Well, I wont argue with that last line, if I didn't lose count, the ELP uses five lasers to read these discs. This thing is expensive for sure, but it is such a very interesting and sophisticated machine. We should congratulate the engineers involved in such a feat and also Mr. Sanju Chiba, President of ELP Corporation, as they passed a milestone in 2005 by selling their 1000th unit! I can imagine that museums or collectors or any place that has one-of-a-kind recordings, would love one of these, as they certainly allow the listening without fear of damage. For those that are interested in such technology, you can find much more information on the ELP website.

web site
Why Vinyl Records? Why Not CDs?

Sanju Chiba, president of ELP Corporation
Sanju Chiba, President of ELP Corporation
Welcome to our web site! I hope you find it enjoyable and informative.

First, I would like to tell you why ELP continues to promote the Laser Turntable (LT) in spite of the digital music revolution.

Today, many people still own vinyl records but run into similar difficulties:

(1) For sentimental reasons, people hold on to vinyl record collections. However, these collections can warp or break over time, and they can no longer be played on traditional needle-based turntables.
(2) Some prefer the sound of analog music, but are worried about damaging vinyl records further using a needle.

The LT is no-contact and no-wear; audio information is read using lasers. This preserves the audio on records that have never been played on a traditional turntable and protects those that have. Also, audio is reproduced with no digitalization, preserving the analog sound (please refer to the detailed information on our home page).

Through the use of new technology, it is our dream to make vinyl record playback problem-free. We also believe that new technology should have an additional purpose: to re-vitalize old products and prevent them from becoming obsolete. Music and sounds in vinyl records--an invention dating back to Mr. Edison's phonograph--should be maintained without any distortion and without wear or damage. Based on these beliefs and policies, ELP acquired the patent from the original developer, Finial Technology, and started promoting the LT in 1989. Since then ELP has resolved many technical and non-technical issues in the research and development of the LT.

ELP decided not only to operate its LT business for profit, but to adhere to this philosophy. Using this philosophy as our guideline, ELP has worked very hard and achieved a milestone in 2005 of 1,000 units sold. This means that only ELP, together with current LT users, is in a unique position to offer the opportunity for more people to enjoy vinyl records on the ELP Laser Turntable.

-Sanju Chiba, President

A TRUE STORY,REMEMBER DO NOT CHEAT ON YE BRIDE AS THIS CAN HAPPEN TO YE!

TIOGA-NICETOWN - May 17, 2006 - A Philadelphia man is recovering from an attack, allegedly at the hands of his wife. The assault on his private parts has become public knowledge. In an interview with Action News after his release from, the 52-year-old victim spoke of his terrifying ordeal.
The 52-year-old Tioga-Nicetown man, who we are identifying only by his first name of Howard, arrived home late Wednesday, hours after his wife allegedly tore off two parts of his genitalia with her bare hands. Surgeons at Einstein successfully managed to repair the damage.

Howard/Tioga-Nicetown: "Doctors did a beautiful job in E.R. and the paramedics did a wonderful job, they only took 4 minutes to get here."

Howard says his 40-year-old wife Monica, who he says is bi-polar, somehow conceived the notion that he was cheating on her. So while he was asleep last night, she attacked him.

Police outside the home in Tioga-Nicetown following the domestic incident early Tuesday morning.

Howard: "I mean she just grabbed me all down there and yanking and yanking and tearing me up with those fingernails."

Police and paramedics rushed to the man's row home in the 3800 block of Pulaski where they found him bleeding profusely. He was rushed to Einstein where doctors first labeled his condition critical. He was later upgraded to stable after having reattachment surgery and a few doses of morphine. Howard still cannot believe his wife of 11 years would allegedly do this him.

Howard: "I can see doing something like that to a rapist, or mugger but not a husband, not something like..."

Dann: "She thought that you were cheating on her?"

Howard: "I wasn't cheating on nobody, I'm home in bed at 8' 0 clock every night, I mean I'm not out there messing around."

Brian Lawson/neighbor: "I mean men cringing when they hear the story, I mean uh, I'm just cringing thinking about it."

Antoinette Fortune/Neighbor: "Who would wanna do something like that?"

Unidentified Neighbor: "That's kinda nasty. That's drastic isn't it? He's lucky to be alive."

Some neighbors say Howard's had problems with his wife before and has thrown her out only to let her back in. They worry what'll happen next.

Dann Cuellar: "Howard, you're not gonna let her back in here are you?"

Howard: "Oh no, no, no. She's in jail where she belongs."

At one point, Howard's wife Monica was facing attempted murder charges but now, the D.A.'s office has asked that a psychiatric evaluation be performed before any charges are filed.

Black Robbers

Black Robbers

For anyone who didn't see David Letterman's take on this: (And it's a true story)

On a recent weekend in Atlantic City, a woman won a bucketful of quarters at a slot machine. She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to stash the quarters in her room. "I'll be right back and we'll go to eat," she told her husband and carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator.

As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were black. One of them was tall....very tall...an intimidating figure. The woman froze.

Her first thought was: These two are going to rob me. Her next thought was: Don't be a bigot, they look like perfectly nice gentlemen. But racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her. She stood and stared at the two men. She felt anxious, flustered and ashamed. She hoped they didn't read her mind but Gosh, they had to know what she was thinking!!!

Her hesitation about joining them in the elevator was all too obvious now. Her face was flushed. She couldn't just stand there, so with a mighty effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the elevator. Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed.

A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The elevator didn't move. Panic consumed her. My God, she thought, I'm trapped and about to be robbed! Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore.

Then one of the men said, "Hit the floor." Instinct told her to do what they told her. The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the elevator floor. A shower of coins rained down on her. Take my money and spare me, she prayed.

More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, "Ma'am, if you'll just tell us what floor you're going to, we'll push the button."

The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh. The woman lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up.

Confused, she struggled to her feet.

"When I told my friend here to hit the floor," said the average sized one,

"I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor I didn't mean for you to hit the floor, ma'am." He spoke genially. He bit his lip. It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing.

The woman thought: My God, what a spectacle I've made of myself. She was humiliated to speak.. She wanted to blurt out an apology, but words failed her.

How do you apologize to two perfectly respectable gentlemen for behaving as though they were going to rob you? She didn't know what to say.

The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters and refilled her bucket.

When the elevator arrived at her floor they then insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor. At her door they bid her a good evening. As she slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with laughter as they walked back to the elevator. The woman brushed herself off.

She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband.

The next morning flowers were delivered to her room - a dozen roses.

Attached to EACH rose was a crisp one hundred dollar bill. The card said:

"Thanks for the best laugh we've had in years."

Stop Running XP as Administrator
Author: Digital Dave
Date: 02-May-2006
Modifed: 02-May-2006

One of the things EVERYONE does is run WinXP as and Administrator and to be honest, this irritates the hell out of me.

Now before I get inundated with email with the likes of "well, I have to run it as an Admin else nothing works!" WRONG SPACE BOY!!! You just have to know how to use the "Admin Account".

Now, realizing running as an Admin on the local machine makes life a lot easier what people fail to understand is it also makes life VERY convenient for the folks who write BUGS, VIRUSES, and SPYWARE. That's right folks, if you ran your system as USER with limited rights all the nasty people in the world would have a much more difficult time getting the nasty stuff on your PC since most of the services and programs they want to run on your PC require some sort of service or Admin approval.

"Well, I can't install applications if I don't run as an Admin!" - Again... WRONG SPARKLES!! See, when you setup the PC it MADE an Admin account (but left the password blank which I don't understand at all) then it made a user account which, during the Windows XP install, gave you Admin rights so installing apps was easy. What people don't seem to realize is, you can install any application you want as long as you know the Admin password (which should always be different than the user account).

If you want to install an application while running as a standard user all you have to do is right-click on the app and choose "Run as...", then hit the check box next to "Following User". Put in Administrator and the password for the Administrator. If you have not set a password for the administrator (by default the Admin account's password is... **gulp**... left blank) then set one for the Administrator now:

- Right-click "My Computer" and choose "Manage"
- In the left hand column you will see "Local Users and Groups" - double click it
- Highlight Users
- Looking the right hand column. Right-Click on Administrator and choose "set password" (remember to keep this password different than the rest of the account passwords).

All Done...

Now, when you want to install and application or make a change to the system you can use the Run As command and, if you run into to much trouble you can always log back into the Administrator account and make changes.

Now, lets just say you're ego simply can't take running as a standard user. Okay, I get that so what other options are their? How about running as a Power User? Yea, has a nice ring to it doesn't it? Okay so what's the difference between a power user and a standard user? Ah... this page will help with that.

Now, during the initial machine setup I normally will leave the default admin account tied to the first account made on the system until I have installed all the applications, Windows updates, and the rest of the applications I need. After that, I simply remove the Admin rights to the account and use either a Power User profile or a Standard user profile depending on whom I'm setting up on the system. If I need to install an application or a utility it's pretty simple to just right click on the application I want to install and choose "Run As...".

So, lets say you are reading this article and you think "this guys BRILLIANT! I have to send him cash!" Hey... I can try.

No, seriously let's say you're thinking about trying this out just to see what's it's like. How do you remove the Admin account from your current account? Simple.

- Log off Windows XP.
- If you have the default multi-user Windows XP logon menu - hit ctrl-alt-del TWICE.
- In the new login box type Administrator and the password for the Administrator. If you never set a Administrator password just hit enter. Make sure you set a password for the Admin!
- Right-click "My Computer" and choose "Manage"
- In the left hand column you will see "Local Users and Groups" - double click it
- Highlight Users
- Looking the right hand column. Right-Click on the user account you want to modify and choose - Properties
- Click the "Member Of" tab, highlight Administrator and choose remove.
- Click Ok and your all set.

Logoff the Admin account and log back in to the account you just modified and take a tour. See what you like and don't like. If you want to try running as a "Power User" follow the steps in the last section but, instead of removing an account click: Add - Advanced - Find Now - and choose Power User. Once you add the Power User make sure you remove the regular User account (you don't need that anymore).

Bottom line is this:

You do NOT need to be an admin to read email, play games, or browse the web. The protection of running as a standard user or even as a power user far outweighs the small inconvenience you might bump up against. On top of that... if you set your kids up as just standard users think of the all the times they're going to need that "password" to install an app that, well you might not want them to install.

FACTS ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

English is a West Germanic language which is the dominant language in the United Kingdom, the United States, the Republic of Ireland, many Commonwealth nations including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and other former British colonies. It is also an important or official language in many countries formerly under British or American rule, such as India, Nigeria and the Philippines.

English is currently one of the most widely spoken and written languages worldwide, with some 380 million native speakers. Only Chinese and Hindi have more native speakers while Spanish is similar in number. English is also the dominant member of the Germanic languages. It has lingua franca status in many parts of the world, due to the military, economic, scientific, political and cultural influence of the British Empire in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries and that of the United States from the Second World War to the present.

Through the global influence of native English speakers in cinema, music, broadcasting, science, and the Internet in recent decades, English is now the most widely learned second language in the world.

Because a working knowledge of English is required in many fields and occupations, education ministries around the world mandate the teaching of English to at least a basic level

English is an Anglo-Frisian language brought to Britain in the 5th Century AD by Germanic settlers from various parts of northwest Germany. The original Old English language was subsequently influenced by two successive waves of invasion. The first was by speakers of languages in the Scandinavian branch of the Germanic family, who colonised parts of Britain in the 8th and 9th centuries. The second wave was of the Normans in the 11th century, who spoke Norman (an oďl language closely related to French).

While modern scholarship considers most of the story to be legendary and politically motivated, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reported that around the year 449, Vortigern, King of the British Isles, invited the Angles to help him against the Picts. In return, the Angles were granted lands in the south-east and far north of England. Further aid was sought, and in response came Saxons, Angles, and Jutes. The Chronicle talks of a subsequent influx of settlers who eventually established seven kingdoms.

These Germanic invaders dominated the original Celtic-speaking inhabitants, whose languages survived largely in Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Ireland. The dialects spoken by the invaders formed what would be called Old English, which resembled some coastal dialects in what are now north-west Germany and the Netherlands. Later, it was strongly influenced by the North Germanic language Norse, spoken by the Vikings who settled mainly in the north-east (see Jórvík).

For the 300 years following the Norman Conquest in 1066, the Norman kings and the high nobility spoke only Anglo-Norman. A large number of Norman words were assimilated into Old English. The Norman influence reinforced the continual evolution of the language over the following centuries, resulting in what is now referred to as Middle English.

During the 15th century, Middle English was transformed by the Great Vowel Shift, the spread of a standardised London-based dialect in government and administration, and the standardising effect of printing. Modern English can be traced back to around the time of William Shakespeare.
