Do you really need another media player software?

Standalone players are not the only way to watch a movie. You can watch a movie also on your computer, but it's necessary to use a media player able to support all your video formats.
There are already many media players available, some with plenty of features, but usually not available for free. But do you really need these costly features? And is it really possible to obtain certain features only by payment?

Mr.Tweak writes to tell us that they have a review posted of a new wireless router from ASUS. What sets this router apart from others is that in addition to being a wireless router/gateway is that it also functions as a thin client system with a pre-installed 160 GB IDE drive (no SATA support sorry) and three USB 2.0 ports for peripherals. If you happen to use one of those USB ports for another drive the router will also support RAID 0 and 1, quite a bit more than the average router.

The infection known as FluxDVD, you know the one that puts so many bad sectors in downloaded and burnt DVDs that most players have a hard time playing it, has been comprehensively fixed by Slysoft.

DUBLIN (AFP) - An Irish company has thrown down the gauntlet to the worldwide scientific community to test a technology it has developed that it claims produces free energy.

The company, Steorn, says its discovery is based on the interaction of magnetic fields and allows the production of clean, free and constant energy -- a concept that challenges one of the basic rules of physics.
It claims the technology can be used to supply energy for virtually all devices, from mobile phones to cars.
Steorn issued its challenge through an advertisement in the Economist magazine this week quoting Ireland's Nobel prize-winning author George Bernard Shaw who said that "all great truths begin as blasphemies".
Sean McCarthy, Steorn's chief executive officer, said they had issued the challenge for 12 physicists to rigorously test the technology so it can be developed.
"What we have developed is a way to construct magnetic fields so that when you travel round the magnetic fields, starting and stopping at the same position, you have gained energy," McCarthy said.
"The energy isn't being converted from any other source such as the energy within the magnet. It's literally created. Once the technology operates it provides a constant stream of clean energy," he told Ireland's RTE radio.
McCarthy said Steorn had not set out to develop the technology, but "it actually fell out of another project we were working on".
One of the basic principles of physics is that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only change form.
McCarthy said a big obstacle to overcome was the disbelief that what they had developed was even possible.
"For the first six months that we looked at it we literally didn't believe it ourselves. Over the last three years it had been rigorously tested in our own laboratories, in independent laboratories and so on," he said.
"But we have been unable to get significant scientific interest in it. We have had scientists come in, test it and, off the record, they are quite happy to admit that it works.
"But for us to be able to commercialise this and put this into peoples' lives we need credible, academic validation in the public domain and hence the challenge," McCarthy said.

Spear Phishing Targets Users On Networking Sites
pharming Seventeen year old Dan Leveille uses MySpace.com not only to connect with friends but to promote his photography and web design business. "I'm on there pretty much every day; I can spend like hours on there," he said.
So when a music group contacted him, Leveille clicked on the profile, but a login page popped up instead.
"I thought it was MySpace, it looked exactly like it, but on the address bar, it didn't say MySpace.com," Leveille said.

So download Don't Download This Song. It's DRM free in the MP3 format, which means it can be played on every player including the iPod, a statement in itself. Do it. Even Lars Ulrich knows it's wrong.

Plextor has announced a very small, USB bus powered burner, which means you need no external power supply, that is also RAM compliant! This is a very neat concept and it will be interesting to know how much this thing will cost and also what software it will come bundled with. Looks like you need to be running Windows 2000 or XP to use it though. From this press release over at Hartware.net, we also learn that the PX-608CU features lower power consumption, for example, just 4.8 Watt during DVD-R 8x writing, and includes tilt adjustment ? a new technology in OPU design.
