When I knew nothing about Burners, Media, etc., I usually did all my burning at 2x because I noticed I ended up with less coasters. Now I own two NEC drives and buy good media, but still burn at 2x. I guess old habits die hard. When I run Nero's DVD tool on a NEC burned TY media, I get quality readings in the 80's (usually 84-88) and a few more errors than expected. If Nero DVD Tool says 4x and 8x write strategy, does it mean you have to burn at one of those speeds to get better quality burns? Since I don't have anything worth burning right now, I'd rather ask instead of wasting quality media experimenting...

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

I like you always kept my burn speeds down to minimum and carried that over to my recently bought Benq 1640 (16X).

When I bought Verbatim 16x DVD+R I got very average results at x4, under 90 a lot of times.

Were a few peeps on here (Doc TY) had burned their discs at x8 and achieved better results. So I gave it a try and usually have Nero Quality scores ranging from 99-95%.

hehe..thanks for the "shout-out" ashj~ :)

on your NEC drives, i have an older one, the NEC 3520a, i burn ALL my 8x and 16x rated Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims @8x with excellent results, yes, it's normal for people to say, "the slower the burn, the better the result"...however, depending on WHICH drive you use, this is NOT always the case...

seriously, burning @2x is NOT necessary...that is UNDER-CUTTING it quite a bit...speed up ur burns, using good GENUINE TY media, i am willing to bet that your Nero scans WILL give you results in the 90's if you burn AT LEAST @ 4x and possibly even better @8x :)

i don't have much experience with NEC drives in general, as you can see i have an old model, but, from my experience with quite a few burners that i do own...on Taiyo Yuden media especially, and with the Benq 1640 that ashj mentioned, you will get the best results burned @8x or even higher speeds on the 16x rated media (Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden specifically) :)

hermes...bump up your burn speed, trust me, it won't hurt to try @4x or 8x on your TYs...2x is DEFINITELY too slow in my opinion, you might just be pleasantly surprised when you see your 4x or 8x burns on Taiyo Yuden media give you 90%+ scores compared to your 84-88 scores now~ :)

Looking through my "suscripted discussions" I found this one, and realized I never told you guys how it went. I know it's kinda pointless right now since it's been dead for two months, but I like to have some closure. My God!! That sounded so girlie (or gay). For my manhood's sake, let's say I hate unfinished business. LOL. Well, all of you were right. I'm getting now 97-98 quality readings when burning my TY media at 8X. End of Discussion...Thanks.

For all of my genuine YUDEN000T02 (8X DVD+R TY), I burned them 4X - 8X (50/50) and my results are 95% - 98/99%. For MCC004, I got better results when I burned them at 4X or 8X, but if I burned them at 16X (max), my quality results via Nero CD-DVD is only 50% and under. So, as for now, I only burned anywhere from 4X - 8X when using MCC004. As for Maxell002 (MIJ 8X DVD+R), I got almost the same results as YUDEN (95% "mostly" and 98% "about 5%").

i've been burning all weekend (i never want to see another disc again!), but at 8x since i dug out a load of unused tubs of Verbatim +R (MCC003).

Normally i have to do 4x even on my top notch Verbatim TY (the only burn speeds my LG drives offer on the Verb TY 4x and 8x) but i can only rarely do any at 4x otherwise i get coasters at the lead-in stage at 8x. Now since i popped in an MCC003 disc in one of the LG drives (i should mention here i haven't used any MCC003 or MCC004 since i bought the LG drives) i had 4x, 8x and even 12x available to me, so i started doing 8x (one of the LG's is even USB2.0 connected) and i have done literally 100s of flawless 8x burns over last few days, the drives have stormed thru discs like a flamethrower, a few of those burns were even done as dual burns ie thru Nero's 'multiple recorders' tickbox which i only recently discovered :)

So, being as the Verbatim TYG02 seem to be like gold dust in the UK i've bought up a load of MMC004 (had only used a few of these when they first came on the market), and i'll no doubt be burning all of them at 8x, my remaining 1000 odd Verb TY i have will have to stay at 4x.

Sounds to me like i need either better quality burners ie maybe the LG aren't that good after all, or i need to find a way to tweak the firmware to allow consistent 8x burns on the Verb TY...

For what it's worth, a Professor Irie at Tokyo University found that environmental tests showed that 8X media recorded at 4X or 2X failed sooner than when recorded at 8X. One theory is that the marks in the dye may have been very slightly overburned at the slower speeds. I don't know the drive he was using. 8X discs are more stable than 16X, and that makes sense because the dye for 16X is more sensitive and thinner than 8X dye. This would suggest that using 8X discs for long term back-ups is safer than using 16X, and recording at the 8X speed may be the better choice.

There is industry-wide pressure to improve longevity; so in time the 16X may improve significantly.

And I thought I was wasting my time with my last post... I love this forum!!!! I still got about 60 Sony (YUDEN000T02)DVD+R's left (I don't burn much).I guess I'll keep on burning at 8X.
