I've had that problem when the original DVD was scratched up pretty good.

What's the condition of the original DVD?

@ italia13,
That seems to be happening with some movies ripped with the current version of DVDfab (not the beta versions). You don't state what movie you're trying to backup but.......

What you can try is to use the latest beta version of DVDfab 2.9.7.0 Beta4. You can get it here:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=164364

Or

You can try ripping the DVD using DVDdecrypter in file mode (set file mode to ALL, this chooses the whole movie), once you've got the files on your HDD you can then use shrink to open the files, at this point use shrink as you normally would.

here is a guide to using decrypter in file mode:
http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvd-decrypter.php

If you're really having a difficult time of it, AnyDVD will make sure the struggle is over. Get it here.....

Use DVD43 in the back ground and it should take care of the problem

Once AnyDVD has been installed, there's really nothing you have to do except keep it up to date. When you insert a DVD in your drive you'll see the little red fox in the lower right hand corner of your task bar turn a pale color then to red, at this point run shrink as you normally would to rip the files to your hard drive. When pressing the backup tab in shrink, you can have shrink auto start decrypter or Nero (you must have theses apps installed on your system) to burn the files to disk or you can do it manually. AnyDVD comes with a 21 day free trial before you have to purchase it.

If it's red then it's ready, just run dvdshrink and choose open disk if you have a dvd inserted into the drive, shrink will perform a quick analysis then display the files on the dvd.

Re-author the movie:
Click on the re-author tab, look for the "title 1" icon under main movie on the right, double click on it, now click on the compression tab and uncheck all the boxes except the "5.1 AC3 english" audio selection.

Click backup, I know you have Nero so choose to burn with Nero from the drop down menu in the window, then choose an output folder location (nero will look here for the files it needs to burn to disk). When shrink is done Nero will automaticall launch to burn the files to disk.

Uncheck the enable burning with Nero in the Shrink preferences and try it again. Otherwise, this error is indicating a bad disk, try cleaning it or take it back and get another.

Is the disk scratched or smudged on the read side?, if so clean it.

You can try using DVDdecrypter to rip the files to your hard drive first then use shrink to open them and process. If you don't have decrypter here is a link to get it...
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

With anydvd running, rip the DVD files using decrypter in file mode to you hard drive, choosing "ALL" files for the file mode settings, here is a guide...
http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvd-decrypter.php

Let decrypter choose the default output file location (make note of where this is), decrypter will save the files there and create a VIDEO_TS folder, once done use shrink to open the files as decribed above, only instead of choosing the open disk, choose the "open files" in shrink.

What movie are you trying to do, and is this an original disk?

You stated this, that is why I am asking. Does AnyDVD give you any kind of information on this disk when you insert it. Just click on the fox in the tray and this is what it should look like
