Hey, what's up! I'm new to the freeware - am using DVD decrypter & DVD Shrink, found out about DVD Clone 2 - I will be purchasing that plus Any DVD soon since I have read a lot about peps using it and luving it. Am confused by the different types of media. Which should I use? +R or -R, R+DL. I would like to back up some concert dvds that are 3 or 4 hours long. Would +R DL be good for that or should I stay with -R which is what I have used? Am using Nero. I read in another forum that Nero didnt work well with +R DL DVDs and that some DVD players couldnt play the burned +R DL. Is that true?? Anyone with advice would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks

Verbatim +r DL is probably the best Dual layer media out there. Wise choice!

Anydvd? Wise choice. A very good background ripper/and region free program that is updated very regularly. This is one of the few non free programs that I highly recommend.

Why plus RW?

It all depends on your burner. Some models can booktype the plus format of r/rw/and rDL to dvd-rom,making them more compatable on stand alone players. Only the plus format can be booktyped,by a burner that is capable of it like: Benq/Plextor/LG/Lite-on/Ricoh/and some other drives. Sometimes a hacked firmware can do the trick for brands like sony and NEC.

I have a harder time finding the dash DL media. Office max has the verbatim +r 2.4x Dual layers on sale this week: 10 for $19.99

Nero6 does have trouble with the layer break of dl media. I love Nero, but wouldn't chance it for my dl backups. A very good, easy option is using DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read to harddrive and Mode ISO write/locate those mds files and burn away. 1 program process! It also has the capability to booktype. It's surprising quick, despite if you have limited resources on your pc.

Another option is IMGburn which is just like DVD Decrypter ISO write mode.Even looks just like it and it can booktype. Just use DVD Decrypter in ISO read mode/open up IMGburn/locate mds files and burn away. That program is also free.

Here's my main question:
What is the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?

We then can tell you if you have the booktyping capability. That is by far,the highest compable format for stand alone players to recognize.

I have an NEC 3520A burner and have used a couple of the Verbatim DVD+R DL 10 packs so far. I've also tried some Memorex that my friend bought. First piece of advice, STAY AWAY FROM MEMOREX!! Out of the 10 or so that I've burned, about 5 work flawlessly. The Verbatims have had a couple of coasters out of the 20 or so that I've burned, but those only seem to be the ones that I burned with Nero. All that I have burned with DVDD or IMGBurn have worked great, they handle the layer change very well. I have the latest firmware from NEC (not hacked) and DVDD and IMGBurn both allow me to change the media booktype to DVD-Rom. Based on my limited experience with DL media, I would highly recommend Verbatims, but would not use Nero to burn them. Good luck!!

wolfhd,
Nero has problems w/ the layerbreak as does Shrink so I would not use those Program to do a D/L Disk.. Use DVDDecrypter in Mode> Iso > Read and then use either DVDDecrypter or Imgburn to burn the image. DVDDecrypter w/in the .mds file keeps the Layerbreak info that the original disk had and just duplicates the original when it burns the disk. You might also find out that you do not need any other decrypting software when you use .iso read in DVDDecrypter( it is a small quirk as DVDD is reading the disk bit by bit and in file mode it is reading larger amounts of data and this is why Arcoss defeats it in file mode but not in .iso mode). I have done over 40 D/L movies and have not had a problem doing it that way yet. This is why you will not need to use AnyDVD when you do D/L disks. You can though still use AnyDVD w/ the DVD-% disks you do as it is a good program. Stay away from (-) D/l disks as there are problems using that format. Until they fix the problems just stay away.

Don't do DL but alwys use quality medium. Even if the Maxells do burn I've heard of issues later with replay that you don't hear about with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. As Car.Mike indicates I have heard using Decrypter in ISO defeats encryption that would need AnyDVD to rip. That is not to say AnyDVD is not worth the cost as I own it and love it. As far as CloneDVD2 you may not need it unless you want to remove some things like previews and warnings but maintain menu structure etc. Also in that vein Alkohol is a firm believer in vobBlanker which is free and allows editing out previews, FBI stuff etc while keeping menu structure. Added advantage is it is freeware. Look for threads about using vobBlanker as I'm still learning and don't understand all the bells and whistles yet and don't want to lead anyone astray.
Decrypter and Shrink are still powerful tools if used right and as indicated with other freeware may be able to get by without buying AnyDVD. Still a cheap investment in my opinion. Just be aware that while AnyDVD is updated for life, Clone DVD is not.
Good Luck!

To err is human, to really screw up.....use a computer.
