I'm thinking of getting these DVD's but I had problems with my plextor 16x burner failing with some crappy media before. I see the burn speed is not very fast (only 4x) but I don?t mind that. I just care about burn failures and compatibility with home video DVD players.

My benqs have a harder time with the dash format. Benq and plextor have the ability to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom. This booktyping will increase the compatability of your backups with many more stand alone players than the dash format. It actually fools those picky players into playing them, thinking they are dvd-rom,the more universal format.

If plextor is like benq, some of the quality 16x media performs better at 8x and 12x burn than the slower 4x and 2.4x. Verbatim +16x is one brand name that performs better at a faster burn.

Those digital movie quality discs are pretty good. The dash ones did give me issues on my benq 1620. The plus format is excellent on all my drives including my tv recorder.

You can get the verbatim 16x media at Office Max which is on sale this week for $14.99 for a spindle of 50. These are sweet, and the plus 16x code as MCC-004,made by mitsubishi with the advanced metal azo dye.

Burn engines can also contribute to compatability.

What's the model# of your plextor?
What programs you using?
Are you using sticker labels?

I have a plextor px-716A
I'm using DVD-shrink and Nero. (don?t remember the what versions)
I'm not using sticker labels.
They actually have both DVD-R and DVD+R of those DVD's for the sale. I'm think I'm going to go for the +R

I was really disappointed before when my burner failed, using Imation DVD's. I know they are cheap media, but since I paid a little more to get a burner that I thought would be better. . . I figure it would be able to use any media. The burner in my Acer laptop handles the Imation media perfectly. The idea of "you got an expensive burner, now buy expensive media" is just ridiculous to me. :-P That was a response I got here when I was trying to figure out that problem.

Nero is able to booktype, and so is DVD Shrink if you are using Nero to burn with. And as saugmon stated, the +r's are the only ones capable of being booktyped.

The fact that you can get them to burn is good, but you also have to take into consideration how long they will last. 6 months to a year down the road you may not be able to view the discs because the cheap dye used in the manufacturing of the discs have degraded beyond repair.

You don't have to pay much more for the quality media. Take this weeks sales. Verbatims at Office max-spindles of 50 for $15. Now when memosux and HP goes on sale, same exact price. You can get lots of sony/fuji tys-maxell hitachis, and Verbatim mitsubishi's for well under 30 cents each locally.

Now on the web,the dash format is cheaper.Very good deals for dash media there, but not so lucky with the plus format.

Do a google search for plextool. That utility does the booktyping and may also have an error scan test in it.If you want the highest compatability rate, definitely booktype those babies.
