I am getting CRC errors on Shrink (and a similar error on Decrypter) nearly every disc and read lots and lots of pages here but nothing has worked.
I think it's a dodgy laser because the only one I could backup was a DVD5, and the DVD9s all errored around the halfway mark. So I tried to play them in WinDVD and when I skipped chapters to about halfway it froze. Presumably, my drive can no longer read the second layer of a DVD9. It's a "HP DVD Writer 300n" apparently (should it be 300i?) and doesn't really have enough burns to its credit to kick the bucket. I did hear about similar issues with a previous HP burner...
No-one has really discussed this problem here so my question is this:
Have I misdiagnosed the problem? Anything else I should try before I fork out for another drive? (Yes, I tried cleaning it.) Am I the first person to fall victim to this in how-many-thousand posts?
Help me out fellas

DVD Shrink and Decrypter are slowly getting to the point that they just don't work without outside help. Download AnyDVD which has a 21 day full working trial. It runs in the background as a decrypter. Then with AnyDVD running, try ripping one of your dvds again with Shrink. All the new movies are using new encryptions that Shrink and Decrypter can't handle anymore.

Have you tried to find out if there's a firmware update for your drive, these updates add increased media compatibility and additional functionality to the burner?

The latest version should be 3.2, download the dvd300n_320.exe file
You can get it here

The update might solve your problem.

Thanks guys.
I'm having a few issues installing that firmware update because I have uninstalled RecordNow, which came with the drive and is needed for the update. Good old Hewlett Packard. When I sort this shit out I'll let you know if it works.

Not a good day. I tried to do a "non-destructive recovery" which is supposed to restore programs to their factory-shipped condition, but not delete my data files. I backed up my data anyway because I don't trust HP or Compaq, and it's lucky I did because it kept stalling at the "Congratulations, you're finished" part of the windows set-up. (I researched a bit on some forums and it's not an uncommon problem, supposedly requiring some patch that I can't find.)
Anyway, the only thing I could do was a complete format and re-install, which was ok because I'd backed up everything important. So RecordNow is back and the firmware can be updated, which I did. (Thanks for the link, JohnL123.) But even with that update and AnyDVD running in the background, I still get CRC errors anywhere between 48% and 74% of the analysis phase. And now, as an added bonus, the drive won't read any burnt disc, including the ones I've burnt as backups (which incidentally can be read on a friend's laptop.) I don't think it's anything to do with the encryption because that same laptop gets through the analysis with only DVD Shrink running. I was hoping it would fail in the same spot but it didn't.
What do I do now? Buy a new drive? That's what I'm thinking, because I'm getting fed up with this. If anyone has anything else they reckon might work, I'll give it a go, but everything that doesn't work on my computer works on that laptop so I'm inclined to think that the drive is dead. Thanks for the help, John and Jerry... any other ideas?

@MetalWolf Do you have any friends with external USB DVD-RW drives? You could get them to come over and see if your pc would burn successfully with their drive. Then you would know it was the HP burner. My first CD-RW drive was an HP and I paid $400 for it. It was crap. Just a thought.

If you reformated the HDD and reinstalled windows xp, make sure you have at least SP2 installed as well.

I'm sure you did this but:
You state "the drive won't read any burnt disc, including the ones I've burnt as backups", in order for your drive to be able to recognize DVDs and play them, you need to have a DVD decoder installed (was there one provided with the purchase of the burner?, it's usually included as part of a player app like PowerDVD or WinDVD).

CRC errors are usually caused by either a scratched, dirty, smudged, a bad press, or copy protected disk that shrink and decrypter can't handle. Make sure the disk is clean (clean it if it's not), if it's badly scratched in certain areas or if it's a bad press, you may not be able to back this one up so see if you can get another.

Anydvd should be able to take care of any copy protected disks when used with DVDshrink, DVD decrypter, or CloneDVD2, but there is no harm in trying another ripper like DVDFab decrypter (it's free). It's a whole movie ripper so you'll still need DVD shrink to reauthor (to remove extras) and transcode the movie. It's very good when it comes to backing up scratched DVDs and is kept upto date to keep pace with the new copy protection. Get it here...

here is a guide on use...

http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvdfab_decrypter.php

Once DVDFab is done just use shrink to open the files with, reauthor the movie to remove the extras, have it create an ISO image that you can burn with DVD decrypter.

Here is a guide on how to reauthor with shrink...

good luck.

I don't know anyone with a USB burner. The drive will still burn discs, the backups I burnt were fine, but my drive won't read them. I may be tempted to switch internal drives with someone but I doubt it would help.

@johnl123
re: SP2
I haven't got SP2 since reformatting the drive, because the computer I'm talking about isn't the one I'm using now and doesn't have internet access. I think SP2 downloads to the computer itself... is there a way to download it as a setup-type file and transfer via USB drive and then open it on the other computer? Also, I was under the impression that SP2 was mostly internet security updates. Is it necessary on a computer that isn't online?

re: DVD decoder
The drive will play movie DVDs and any other original DVDs, but for some reason won't read burnt discs, even ones that it burnt itself. I wasn't sure if it was the particular brand of disc I was using, so when the laptop read the backed-up files, I copied them to another reliable disc and tried again. No go. Wouldn't play "backup" DVDs either. I have WinDVD so I don't think it's the decoder.

re: bad disc
That was the first thing I eliminated when I was having problems. It was happening with some discs with minor scratches, so I tried fresh new ones with not a scratch in sight, same problem. I then tried all the discs that wouldn't work on my computer on that laptop, and they all worked. It's not the disc.
The only disc that worked in that whole period was a DVD5, which led me to believe it was the laser reading the second layer. That explains why the process always stops around the transition, and why the playback always freezes around the transition, but not the inability to play burnt discs.

It's not the encryption either, because the ones that failed the analysis on my computer worked on the laptop with only Shrink running. All of them. Every single one. Even the scratched ones. I'll get those programs, but I honestly don't think Shrink has failed me yet, just the drive itself. If they failed the analysis on the laptop too, maybe, but it worked.
