5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity (Green Dot), DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip 1.1. The DMS 4 Pro SE has a HD Loader built into the flash and all the feature's you'd expect from a quality modchip, I recommend the DMS 4 SE Pro, because it has a 2MB flash built into the chip, and it's only about $10 more than the DMS 4 SE Lite. If you're interested in playing games off a HD, take a look at the DMS 4 Pro SE.
http://www.dms3.com/dms4se/features.html

The Matrix Infinity is the grandfather of auto boot modchips. It was the first modchip to auto boot backups/imports with no swapping/resetting. It's feature packed and simple to use. Matrix Chips are probably a little more durable than the other two, and extremely reliable. There are a lot of Matrix Infinity clones out there, make sure you order from one of the reputable installers listed in this thread.
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=chip_infinity

The Crystal Chip 1.1 is the latest contender to graduate to the top flight chip category. It is feature packed, simple to use, and effective. The CC auto patches DNA ID's so you'd never need to bother with Windip, Winimage, or Disc ID Insertor. Definitely recommended if you play your backups online alot. To boot backups/imports the Crystal Chip requires the use of "hacked" firmware. It's simply the official firmware modified so the chip can boot backups and imports. Everyone who uses the CC uses the hacked firmware, so fear not. The only feature that the CC doesn't share with the other two chips is support for cheat devices like ARMAX or Game Shark.

CC 1.1 Hacked Firmware v.19: http://www.forumconsolas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1213

I personally have a Matrix Infinity and it works great. I have no regrets as to getting a modchip over Swap Magic. Once you have a quality modchip, you'll never go back to disc swapping again. It cost's a little more in the short term, but think of all the time you'll save rebuilding, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, patching PAL games to NTSC, and the like. If you haven't noticed, most people who have trouble getting games to boot are Swap Magic users. This isn't nearly as frequent a problem for people who have modchips. Just some food for thought.

Note: v.12-14 PS2's will need a laser fix like the neo fix. This is necessary to keep the laser from burning out.

From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:

If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12-V14 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.
Laser fix info: http://www.modchip.com/ps2/v12laserfix.htm

26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition http://www.modchip.com and http://www.norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable. http://www.Xmodds.com is another quality mod site. If you're interested in a premod or modchip, be sure to order from one of these high quality sites.

Yes siree bob. It may not be a 100% perfect, I've had instances where some text at the bottom is slightly obscured, but nothing that will affect gameplay. It's still excellent, and a handy feature to have. For instance I'm downloading the PAL FFX right now, because it has some features that weren't in the NTSC version.

Yeah the MI allows for an auto Y fix, or manually adjusting of + or -20 for the Y fix coordinates. What about the DMS 4?

it has an auto fix, but i've never found a need to use it myself, i have it set to force NTSC only and it works perfect with every PAL game i've tried.

Aha the MI is better, it allows for either an auto fix or manual adjusting lol. I'm j/k. Cheers!

i cant say the DMS doesn't have an adjustable one, I've just never found a need to try it out and see. if it works i tend to leave things alone.

Nope, never had any games that wouldn't work. I have 130+ PS2 backups, and they all play perfectly. I have 100 PSX backups, same deal. Originally I wanted a modchip to play through a bunch of PSX multi disc backups that didn't allow you to save in between discs. It works perfectly for that, though I admit, I don't plan on playing through PSX games anytime soon. It's really a cool thing to have. No you don't need to rebuild games with a chip. I rebuilt two games-NBA Live 2006 and NHL 2006, when I was using RitekG05 media. Since I switched to TYG02, I haven't rebuilt a single game. On top of that there's no need to shrink DVD-9 to DVD-5, patch PAL games to NTSC or vice versa, patch PSX games, or rebuild games. Nothing beats a staight burn of a DVD-9 game. Shrinking a DVD-9 to DVD-5 is a pain in the arse, plus I want all the features of the original game intact. In my opinion the MI or DMS 4 Pro SE blows Swap Magic out of the water. If I had it to over again, well I'll let you figure that one out. Modchips are awesome, end of story.

The DMS 4 SE Lite comes with the HD Loader built into the flash, I believe. It's a good chip, but there's no real reason to go with the Lite over the Pro. The Pro's only like $10 more. It's an excellent chip. That or the MI are the best chips, hands down. http://www.teammodders.com did mine. The infamous yoda of mods, Davbere did mine. He's the best.

Don't order from that site. Order from one of these reputable installers:

Well none of the modders on that list are on the official resellers list for the MI or DMS 4 chips, but they're all reputable dealers. The prices on the other sites aren't that bad. In my opinion, being an official reseller has little to do with quality, and more with money. Regardless, if you order outside of those sites, it's your choice.

as far as the SE difference there are some improvements in the flashing as well as lay out of the PCB, the chip is smaller as well which helps with pressure causing BSOD, defiantly get an SE.

the Lite can boot Dev mode but my suggested preference is the Pro and go with the Toxic OS 0.41 not sure team toxic has their site back up currently or not but if not then you can get the flash from allot of people just make a post requesting it.

your choice of whom to buy from is personal choice only in most cases, if you read the reseller ratings on modchip.com they are rated one of the worst but I've had excellent results with them. any place can have good and bad, I've ordered over 300 PS2 chips and a truck load of PSX/PS1 chips of various types at one time or another and I've had both good and bad experiences while doing so from the same companies.

There's only one game that's mod protected that I'm aware of, Rugby League 2. It's an obscure game only released in the U.K. and Europe. No NTSC-US PS2 games have ever been mod protected that I'm aware of.
