First, welcome to AD

Second, turn off your caps...its considered shouting.

DVD Shrink is an excellent program, but it only has built in support for using with Nero and DVD Decrypter. You can burn the ISO image that it creates with Sonic, but if you get DVD Decrypter or Nero the process would be much simpler.

The Sonic Family software consisting of DVDiT, MyDVD,Record Now & DVD Producer are all for video capture & editng. Unless you are into home movies or convert from DV, these software are worthless for movie ripping. Get DVD Shrink & AnyDVD - this pair is made in heaven.

He doesn't need to rip, just burn...the image is already on the HDD.

Thanks and sorry for the shouting. I saw in another forum that roxio and Nero did not work well together. Im not sure but is Roxio and Sonic one and the same?, I think i can download a free trial version of Nero.

Thanks for the reply

No they are not the same.

You can Imgburn for free here: http://www.imgburn.com

and DVD Decrypter can be found free here: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm

Thanks again, see DVD Shrink does not allow me the option to burn directly after analysing and encoding im only given the option of saving it to they hard drive. My next problem is that I dont understand how to use the sonic software to burn the iso file. The pc came with a short tutorial.

Use one of the proggy I've given you the link too. For DVD Shrink to pick up DVD Decrypter you'll have to uninstall shirnk( I think), and then reinstall it. Or you can just open DVD Decrypter in ISO write mode, select your ISO image and burn it. The same with Imgburn.

I myself hate sonic and have no use for it.

First of all the "ISO image file and burn with decrypter" option in shrink will not be available until you install decrypter on you system. You can get it from the link provided above.

Second, if you plan on having shrink create an ISO image file, I would use either decrypter or ImgBurn to burn it with:

For using decrypter:
choose mode--ISO Write if you plan on doing it manually or choose to save target as "ISO image file and burn with decrypter" to have it done automatically by shrink.

For using ImgBurn:
Have shrink save an image file to your HDD.
Just run the application, choose the location of the image, choose your recorder location, set write speed of 4x and press the burn icon. You can get imgBurn from the link above.

What exactly do you mean when you say that the movie is in your DVD drive? I thought that you have the movie encoded on your HD already.

So, do you have the movie on your HD, or you have a DVD in your burner and want to make a back-up? If you have the image file on your HD, then the source should be the ISO file saved on the HD(the movie that you just encoded, browse the HD and find its location), and the target should be the burner.

Yes, you can burn with Decrypter. First, open the movie with Shrink. Here is a guide
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=8...

After you click Back-up(page 5 of the guide),under Target Device, click "Create image and burn with DVD Decrypter" Put a blank disk in your burner, and when is done encoding, Shrink should open DVD Decrypter to burn your image. make sure in Shrink you go under Edit-> Preferences, and under target DVD size select custom and put not more than 4300Gb.
let me know if you have any questions

Here is another guide, maybe more helpful.
http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/16/59/
In your case, @step1 in Shrink, instead of clicking "Open Disk", click "Open Files" and open the DVD files saved on your computer.

At the top you stated that shrink gave you two options when the backup tab was clicked on, create an "ISO image file" or "hard disk folder", what should of been chosen was "ISO image file" and then select a location/folder to store it on the HDD.

Now that you have decrypter installed you can use it to burn the image file to disk. To do this run decrypter and choose mode-->ISO Write, this will open up the burning section/window of decrypter. Here choose the location where you had shrink save the image file to, then for output choose your recorder/burner (there should already be blank media in it), now select 4x for write speed and press the burn icon in the lower center of the window. Decrypter should now begin the burning process and play a toon when done.

In the future, I would suggest that when the backup tab is clicked on in shrink choose to save target as "ISO image file and burn with decrypter" to have it done automatically by shrink.

That is because you are looking at the wrong program. We were talkingabout DVD Decrypter, not DVDFab Decrypter. There is a big difference. Both free, but Fab can not write.

Are you at the moment using DVDshrink to transcode files already on your HDD or are you ripping directly from the DVD? What movie are you trying to backup?

From Digital Digest on your error
Quote:
Failed to read file - Incorrect function

Error code ver 3.2:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue
Failed to read file "X:\ "
Incorrect function

Solution:

a) This is a known issue between some backup softwares (including DVD Shrink) and DVDs recorded on a set-top.
b) Bad IDE cables. Credit: Maynard
c) If you can't read with your reader/burner and you have the problem with all DVDs - try to reinstall it. Kill the device in Windows and restart the PC. Credit: psi2244

Ripping means you are taking the image of your original disk and directing that image to be put on a device. In the case of Shrink that device is your HDD, which then can be directed to be burned to a DVD5 disk. Where are you putting your output file, what have you chosen for Shrink to do?
