Can anyone tell me if its a myth or not, that the slower you burn a DVD, the better the quality is, something like the laser burns deeper and the recording lasts longer

Another myth. At a certain point, you're just wasting your time. A lot depends on equipment and media quality though. Many people burn at 4X. Not so long ago, that was max speed. Now speeds are up to 16X, but I wouldn't advise going quite that fast. The possibility of write errors increases as speed increases. I usually burn at 6X and have no doubt I could burn at 8X without problems. I don't want to press any limits and the time savings aren't that great. So, start at 4X and work your way up. Personally I wouldn't get over 8X for Video recording on the R media. I don't think I want to go over 4X on the DL. My drives will go 6x and 8x on those, but again, I don't like pushing the max.

Have good equipment and always buy good media.

thanks,

i've been reading some of the problems on here and although i have a good PC and writer, (IBM P4 pc and LG writer) with all the latest updates and firmware, i still get a lot of skippy freezing copies.

I use datawrite DVD's but i use the PC in the background and i hear that is a NO-NO!!! so i'll refrain from doing that now.

I'll also buy some new higher quality DVD's

I burn to the rated speed with my quality 8x and 4x media. Now with the newest 16x media like verbatim +16x,I do have more errors at the slower speeds. Too many crc errors on those that were backed up at 2.4x. The 4x burns also had a lot of errors. 8x and 12x had the best scans using dvdinfopro.Quality burners and quality media are a must. You can burn faster-better performance- with that combination.

I'll bet those issues are while you view them on your stand alone player.

Play one of those skippy backups in that LG drive on the pc.Just watch those areas that skip. Also test them out on some other stand alones and see how they fare with them.

Data write have some crappy manufacturers for them. With age, those stand alones will pick out the quality of your media with playback issues like you are having.

If you have a local Office max,you can get some excellent verbatims for $15 a tub of 50. Bestbuy has the 25 pack tubs of verbatim digital movie quality for about $8. You don't have to pay more for quality media, just got to know where to look!
