I just got a 50 pack of Sony +R's at Staples. I heard Sony's were good, but I've burned 5 discs and every single one has been a coaster so far. Is it possible that this whole spindle is defective? I've never had that happen to me before. This is reallly pissing me off and I was wondering if someone could give me some advice(try to return them, check my burner/computer or something)

Sorry I'm a real newb with this stuff, how do I get a code from Nero?
The media code from DVDidentifier is SONY-D21-000
Supposedly its not bad media. I have a feeling either its my burner or the whole batch is defective, since the problem with every disk is that there is a darker inner circle about the size of a mini-cd or dvd.
I'm trying to update my burner's drivers but theres barely any support for my model, its an NEC 3100. There are some home-made drivers I'm about to try, does that sound like a good idea?
I spent 40 bucks on these disks and didn't get a receipt, so I'm pretty determined to make these work.

Not much support on the firmware on this drive - if you choice some 'homemade' ones - watch out - could fry your drive.
How fast are your burning this discs? That could be your issue.
Sony is pretty good - I just went thru a 50 pack of -r's that id as sony making. My preference and I mainly use Taiyo Yuden though.
Have you tried any others since the sony's?

Okay I got my hands on the latest driver but still no luck. I'm not going to bother with the homemade one because its pretty complicated to install and I don't think it will work anyway. I've never used Sonys before, usually I buy Verbs but these were all they had at staples.
I've burned 7 discs at 8x, 6x and 4x, and the media is rated from 1-16x (my drive only goes to 8). And every disk has had the same defective dye pattern
I guesss my main question is, it possible that every disk has this same defect and I just bought a crappy batch? Or do you think its a drive-compatability issue?

Yes, you can get a bad spindle of media. It usually doesn't happen very often from good manufactures, but it can happen. If you check the media before you burn it, it should look the same, no big un-even areas, or blotches, even coat of dye to edge, same uniform color. I have burned probably close to 300 D-21 sony media, and they were all good. Not as good as the Tys, but not bad either. It sure sounds like you got ahold of a bad batch. The Sonys are one of the few medias i will accept if it is MIT. Verbatim being the other one.
Usually the better media manufacters will have a better quality control department, and they catch most of the stuff before it gets out the door. Sometimes things slip by the QC dept. The best way to see if it is drive or media, is to try a Verbatim or two. If they make it, it was the media. If the Verbs fail also, it looks like a drive issue. I checked the firmware site and this is what it said about the NEC Quote: NEC DVD+RW ND-3100AD - No Firmware Updates Available
.
I had an LG drive that had no firmware listed, and i emailed the drive site asking about firmware updates. They said don't update unless they come out with a firmware update. 3 weeks later they came out with an update.
Try the different media test just to make sure it is the media that is defective..

mrdl1230,
Ive had a bad experience with sony as well that i bought from circuit city. Coasters after coasters and every now and then one would get partly to the end then freeze. Didnt realize till i had copied about thirty that i had these problems cause its not like i can sit and watch each one. Eventually got the taiyo yudens online and have NEVER had a problems since. Worth the 5 days to wait for them to come in and they were about the same price.

Try burning one of those sonyD21's from near the bottom of the spindle.
Quote: but I've burned 5 discs and every single one has been a coaster so far
Please explain how these are coasters:
Burn errors
Ejecting disc when burn process starts
Playback issues-stand alone player
I've burned a ton of sony Yuden000-T02 which is the japanese spindles of +1x-8x and they are some of the best media out there. I've only burned 50 of the SonyD21 which I bought by accident and didn't notice until the end of the spindle when I went searching for the Authentic taiyo yuden batch code and it wasn't on there. They burned and played ok,but had a lot more errors on my scans than the yuden tys and verbatims.
All my sony media I pick up is made in Japan.
Can you look at that outer label for country of origin?
Japan or Taiwan?
From what I was told at my local staples, you can send those coasters back to sony and they'll ship you a new spindle.May take awhile.

I agree saugmon, the Sony Tys are the best (well really any real Tys), and i go for the MIJ on the label to get them. The MIT have been these D21s lately, and they are ok, but id rather have the TYs. I've also been using quite a few of the Verb 16x +Rs and like those also.
Sometimes the spindles can get damaged in shipping causing the discs to rub against eachother if not shrinkwrapped or packed well. Most of the 50 pack spindles will use a foam washer to keep the discs from moving too much 100 packs tend to shrinkwrap. How the discs were stored before you got them could have something to do with their condition also.

I personally have Never seen a coaster with Sony Media. There could be a LOT of factors which could cause Bad Burns. Burning too fast, firmware compatibility, the software used, etc. Too many factors to name. However, I have used over 500 Sony discs (MIJ & MIT too) & haven't seen any coasters. Not saying a Bad Batch can't happen, but if one has their reciept, Most Stores will exchange them. If you folllow the return policy time limit.
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.
