Hey guy's I wanted to get your opinion on Dvd recordable drives.
I just ordered a Sony DRX-810ul drive for backing up my music and stuff, but more importantly I would also like to be able to use it to copy movies on Dvd.
This drive from Sony is supposed to be pretty a good dual/double layer capable drive, but a friend of mine mentioned Sony (althought they maybe good) might not be the best choose when looking for a good drive to burn Dvd's. He felt like they(Sony) may have created intentional blocking mech's in the internal software to make it harder to copy movies. Do you think there is any truth to this? Should I maybe consider a different brand to avoid this possable conflict? Let me know what you think.

I own and use a Sony DRX810UL drive,F/W 2.0d, firewire connected and I love it. It is internally a (rebadged) BenQ1640 and uses Sony F/W. I have had no problems with any burns on it to date. It is very quite and fast.

Well, I just bought one of these DRX-810UL Sony drives and I am hoping for the best as my old Sony is still ripping and burning like a pro! I have had 4 DL drives bite the dust on me, Memorex +DL, cyberhome +DL, Samsung +DL and LG +DL burners all died within 3-6 months. The bad thing is they die quietly and I don?t find out until my customers tell me that their wedding videos will play half way through then they lock up. ARRRG! I have even seen it myself burn+verify+play=Bad DVD WTF! This is the Man f*&^ing with us and getting us to keep spending money on stuff we should not have to. This is (in my opinion) the only reason why burnt DVDs sometimes work and sometimes don?t, different media, different players, different burners, its all a bunch of crap to keep us spending money. We can send a rocket ship to outer space and circle the globe, we can build a GPS network that will pinpoint you on any location on this planet but we cant get all the Mfing manufactures to use the same technology that works together 100%! Am I the only person on the planet that can see this problem? Why doesn?t anyone do something about it? You did not see this problem with VHS tapes, oh sure the quality sucked but at least I knew that the damn thing would work in any VHS player in anyone?s home. Its so frustrating, this is not rocket science the IEEE needs to jump on this and come up with a harmonized standard for DVD media.

To give you an example, I purchased a DVD player LG up converting home DVD player and it indicates on the box and in the instruction manual that it plays DVD+R. DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW. Now I burn a +R,-R,+RW,-RW disk all of the same wedding video, using pinnacle liquid for editing and authoring and Nero 6 for burning and none of the movies play flawlessly! Keep in mind that I have tried this on several computes several different PCI ATA IDE cards and different recording speeds, different media; all with different results, some work, most don?t, all have some problem of one sort or another. I have even used 7 different burners only 2 from the same manufacture (Sony). This should not be an issue. Not to the point but I also have 10 different DVD players, JVC, KLH, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Toshiba and 3 Taiwan special no name players. I might get one disk to play in one type of DVD player but not in another reliably. Something needs to be done about this or I am just going to start selling divix or XviD on CD to my costumers, but then again they need the proper codecs LOL! It never ends!

My friend, I couldn't have said it any better myself. It's like part of a master plan on the part of our freinds from Japan, to punish use all, in the form of technological torture. They have been and will continue to "hit us in the peverbial pocket" until we either stop buying or go broke trying. Which ever comes first.
The compatablity issues you mentioned were at least part of my concern when purchasing this recorder. Plus I'm pretty sure they (Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.) are actively trying to do anything and everything in there power to stop any consumer copying, at all. Which was my other concern in writing the topic.

Well my new Sony drive burns DVD-Rs flawlessly, it plays in the most finicky of players but the DVD+R DL (Verbatim 2.4X) movies do not work in one player, the Samsung up converting player (my favorite player). The menus work great (this was a problem with the LG burner, menus locked up or the audio would stop working) but when you try to start the video it locks up. I am going to try a few other DVD players tonight. The LG up converting DVD player seams to be less restrictive on the type of media it plays but is picky nonetheless. My KLH player plays anything, even ones that are not authenticated or book marked, too bad its not an up converting DVD player, that thing will pay VOB files that are not even in a VIDEO_TS folder. Now and then the KLH player will spit out a DVD and say no disk, but it is rare. I am also going to try +R media tonight and see if that is any better. All I can say now is that the Sony DRX-810UL is the fastest easiest peace of hardware I have ever used on a PC. Next to no setup, truly plug and play in windows XP. I did update the burner ROM to version 2.0d. I am using the USB 2.0 port for this drive. The buffer on the drive never drops below 80% most internal drives do not drop below 90%. It burned the DVD-R disk in less than 6 minutes on 16X (Fantastic for external burner). Lets hope the DVD+R DL burnt at 2.4X will work better than the one I burned at 4X (Verbatim has a small label that says that it is compatible with 4X burners but there is a big 2.4X on the front of the box).

Sony recomends 2.4X for the DL media. I always booktype the + DVD media for highest compatability with various players. So far, no problems with this burner....

Booktyping or bitsetting is the ability some drives have to write files on +R and +R DL media to mimic the factory DVD ROM format. -R doesn't work. Some if not all of the Sonys booktype. Some even set the booktype for +R DL automatically. You can set booktype with some drives using bundled utilities. Nero can be used to set it and the freeware app DVDInfoPro can be used to set booktype as well. Many of the drives on the market won't booktype. A lot of the reason for booktyping is for player compatibility. I've done quite a few backups in +R (without booktyping) and seen no problems, but with DL I've not done enough to see if it makes a difference. My new Plextor booktypes, so I have it set to do all the DVD Rs in DVD ROM. DLs still cost so much, I'm not into experimenting with them.

So far it's a myth as to the drive manufacturers setting firmware to prevent copying. That's what the copy protection on the DVDs is all about. DVDs with the new ARccOS, Puppetlock, Ripguard with bad VOBUs and bad sectors are causing a lot of trouble, especially the ones showing compliance errors. However with some upcoming technology, some PC systems may have built in copy protection if Microsoft and the manufacturers go along with the entertainment industry. The new Vista operating system may not be so user friendly for copying protected media.

BroBear my man you know your Sh*t. Thanks for the input. I just recieved the Sony drive this past week, and so far so good. It and the DVD Shrink seem to work great together. No problems so far and I have to say, I got it up and burning with little trouble and it backs up fairly quick too!
I'm using Sony -R media (purchased on sale 25pack for 7.99) and they seem to work good with the drive, even burning faster than I expect (16x) without a problem.
Hey BroBear
-What do you recommend I use with or in addition to the Shrink?
-I was told there some software that I can use to adjust the formate of the movie, from like widescreen to full for instance.
Tell me what you think.
Thanks

AnyDVD is a must if you're going to do the new releases from Sony and Disney (and a some others). DVD Decrypter works well with it for ripping files to the HD. AnyDVD breaks the protection and Decrypter merely copies the files to the HDD. I preferr having my source files on the HDD to work with. Shrink is a decent transcoder. Once a person gets a good cleaned source to work with, any good transcoder or encoder can do the job (Shrink being one of those). For quality though, an encoder can't be beat. Check out Rebuilder with the free HC encoder. My favorite is the RB Pro with CCE. That one costs a few bucks. Any project worth the extra effort deserves RB/CCE.
