Hello,

This is my first post so please bear with me. :)

I've been researching this problem for a while now so I have a little bit of an idea on what to do, but I am trying to understand what is going wrong because a lot of the advice is redundant or contradictory.

Question 1. The first step most people usually do is DVDFab or DVD Decrypter. If I can successfully make a COMPLETE backup of the DVD to my HD with DVDdecrypter in File mode, does this mean I have done this step correctly? Is there any situation where Decrypter will run the whole disc without errors/warnings even though I should have done something else during this step because ripguard/arccos were present? Can I just deal with ripguard/arccos afterward?

Question 2. Let's say I don't care about the cost of buying dual layer media in order to write the backup copy of my DVD. Once I have decrypted the files to my HD (with the CSS removed), can I just burn them to dual layer media without having to worry about VOBBlanking, Shrinking, etc? I know any structural protection/ripguard/arccos will still be in effect, but since I do not plan on shrinking it, that should not be an issue.

Question 3. Similar to Question 1. Will DVDShrink run with arccos/ripguard present without showing any errors/warnings?

Thanks for your advice!

1.
Yes, you will get errors otherwise.
No, you will get error messages.
No, this has to be done during the ripping process.

2.
Once you have the files on your HDD, that means that any type of protections have been delt with during the rip process.

DL media holds about 7.95 GB, so a small amount of compression or editing may be needed to make it fit. Some movies total up to 8.5 GB.

3.
No, Shrink will display an error or even crash.

fasfrank, thanks for the thoughtful answers. One point that I have a question on:
Quote:
Can I just deal with ripguard/arccos afterward? (i.e. after I have ripped to my HD using decrypter)

No, this has to be done during the ripping process.
I thought that ripguard/arccos are dealt with by using VOBBlanker (not decrypter)?

In other words, if I don't want to go to the trouble of dealing with ripguard/arccos until later, is it sufficient to merely make a backup with decrypter for the time being and then worry about removing ripguard/arccos when I am ready to shrink?

Thanks.

I'd consider that as part of the ripping process. You would use DVDFab Decrypter rather than DVD Decrypter:

I have not seen folks doing this with DVD Decrypter.

Unless you want to import a PSL into DVD Decrypter. This was the way to proceed a few months ago. I don't know if folks are still doing that.

I just use AnyDVD with Shrink/Nero most of the time.
