How can I boot to the second disk of a game? (Final Fantasy 7, Lunar 2, etc.)

Here's an original problem. In this case I am playing Lunar 2, but I would assume this same problem would occur for any multi-disk game.
(I have a Playstation 2 version 9 (I think), and I use Swap Magic to boot my backups.)
I decide to play Lunar 2, and it boots fine, just like any other game. Fast forward 40 hours later, and I have beaten disk 1. There is an end of disk cinematic, and then it tells me to insert disk 2. When I insert my backup copy of disk 2, it won't read correctly and the screen stays black. And yes, I am 99% sure that the image is flawless.
The first thing I tried was to boot disk 2 using Swap Magic and try loading my game from disk 1. No dice; it immidiately says to insert disk 1.
I guess it's time to buy a modchip... but I want to see if I can delay that purchase a little longer. There has to be another Final Fantasy 7 player out there who has encountered this problem; is there another booting method that I could use to somehow get the PS2 to correctly read the 2nd disk?
Hard disk booting, memory card exploit... can anybody think of a way for this to work?

Well FF7 usually when you finish the first disc they make you save the game and if I remember correctly that saved game makes it possible to load disc two even do you dont actually insert it right away. I say load the second disc as if it was any other and then load your saved game, maybe it will help...

games that do not save at the end of each multi disk require the console to re-authenticate when the next disk is installed, allot of modchips won't do this (top end chips do) and i don't think SM will either but you can try using SM when it asks you to insert the second/next disk.

I use Gameshark 2 v2 PS1 USA to boot PS1 games on my PS2. I bought it on EBay for $5.

Ah, I did not know that about FF7. Lunar does NOT make you save at the end of a disk. =(
KC36330:
I tried ejecting the tray and putting in Swap Magic (CD version, of course). But it doesn't give me a chance to use my slide card - the drive won't stop spinning.
This leaves me with another question:
Will it damage my drive if I try to use my swap card while the drive is still spinning?
If I am fast enough, I could swap disk 1 for disk 2 during the final cinematic of disk 1. Would that work?

Yeah KC is right, you're pretty much screwed when it comes to multi disc games that require a mid-game swap without a modchip. If you try to insert the next disc with a case mod, it'll sit there motionless. The PS2 won't even know you switched discs. If you're using a disc swapping method in combo with a case mode, the whole point is to circumvent the copy protection check each time you open the PS2 disc tray. There's no way to play through multi disc games that require a mid game swap without a modchip like the DMS 4 Pro SE or Matrix Infinity. Here's a MiniFAQ I wrote awhile back about which PSX multi disc games allow you to save in between discs: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/234172
