I have burned DVDs for about a year with no problem using SONY DRX-710UL burner. I use both DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink to burn movies. Just recently, my drive fails to burn. I receive a checking media message - Insert blank DVD. I was using KHypermedia DVD+R (8X), and just switched to Imation DVD+R. The drive does not recognize that media. I have updated the firmware on the drive to the latest version. The drive does not detect any media placed in it. Is my drive bad? I am about to remove & re-install it. Any other ideas?
First, I consider Imation to be poor quality media.
You state: "The drive does not detect any media placed in it"
Does this refer to the Imation disks or nothing at all like disks previously burn with the drive.
Did you reboot the pc after the firmware update and try it again?
Did you uninstall the ide channel the drive is connected to, reboot, have it reinstalled by the OS and try it again?
I'm sure it read/recognized DVDs before the firmware update (except the imation disks as you stated), it's possible that something went wrong with the update procedure, try and reflash the drive and see if it will read/recognize disks.
Read the instructions, download and install the:

Under utilities at the site, you might also want to try the "DriveCheck Diagnostic test"
The DriveCheck Diagnostic Tool is a quick and easy test that determines if your device is defective or working properly. DriveCheck performs read and write tests on your drive. Within minutes, you will know if the drive passed or failed.
Great suggestions, I tried them all. Drive is an external drive and I tried it on my laptop - same error. Ran drivecheck diagnostic on both my pc and laptop with the sony dvd device connected. It will not recognize any media in the drive. I am connected via usb. Tonight will try the other connectors it came with (firewire)?
Drive is 13 mos old (of course I only have a 12 mos) warranty. Is it worth anything to anyone?
